Steering Woe

Hello again, it's dumbass question from the noob time again I'm afraid.

I would like to bring my steering wheel closer to me as at the moment it sits too close to the dash. When cornering I tend to either blare the horn, or start indicating, and on one particularly urgent correction skinned my knuckle!

A spacer is the obivous choice, however my car has an old style boss and wheel with a 102mm (I think) PCD as opposed to the modern 60mm (again I think!) sizing.

Of course I could pop out and get a new wheel, spacer and boss, but wondered if anyone else had any idea as to the existence of a spacer for the old style wheel?

Do I just bite the bullet and upgrade? An offset wheel would perhaps help but can you get them anymore with that size PCD?

can you lengthen the column and leave the wheel alone?

I think you can get wheels that don't have any holes drilled. you could then drill an offset to match your pcd. I'm a noob too so could be talking complete carp! :)

You can fit a new wheel and quick release giving you around 2" forward and an offset for anywhere from £50 upwards, depends what u want really wheel n price-wise?....

How long is your steering boss, the wheel I'm in the process of replacing is I think about 100mm pcd, we had an original boss that is approx 90mm long which we replaced with a 45mm one. I may still have the original but would need to check.

Hi, long delay in response due to only now being able to remove the sandbags from the front of the garage in order to get in and measure it! The current boss is about 50mm deep so if 90mm ones exist I shall start to hunt for one.

I can't move the column any further so to gain the space I want it will have to be a deeper boss or a new boss and new steering wheel which for cost purposes I am keen to avoid. If I can't get a deeper boss for the old style wheel I have then I will have to bite the bullet.

Thanks for the responses.

Pretty sure you can get deeper bosses than that. Do you know which column you have (Allegro, Escort, etc.)? If so, try Europa Spares. I had one from them to suit a Mk2 Escort column that was about 105mm deep. Don't let the web site range put you off, they have other stuff as well not listed if yours isn't on there. Give them a call, always been helpful to me and will be at Stoneleigh so you could reserve one and collect it there.
