O/t Garage Doors

Hi all,

I remember some time last year there was a thread about new garage doors, but having done a search I cannot find it anywhere.

Anyway, after going back in the garage yesterday now all the wedding has finished and time to get back onto the build, however both my garage doors are now broken. The one in front of the Westie has been for a few months, now the other one has also broke.

So any recommendations for online suppliers, and pros and cons for Roller v Sectional v Up and Over ??

thought about spares, but it is the entire spring, cable and runners that have seized over time so its probably just as cheap to buy new I reckon.

It needs to be online supplier, as deepest Cornwall do suffer from lack of decent and cheap suppliers

Thanks in advance

Have you managed to identify the manufacturer, I managed to get some spare side rollers for a Chamberlain some years back and I know there have been several small companies about who service and repair. Might just be local to NW. Maybe as you say in deepest Cornwall you may only have surfer dudes and no service type people. Have a good search on tinterweb. You used to be able to get new cables and stuff like that but watch yer fingers if you diy.

Can't help anymore sorry.

Have you looked at this supplier? http://www.kenilworthspares.co.uk/List.aspx?CatID=57 Sorted me out with spare parts last time I needed some.

Now have a Seceuroglide roller door which was supplied and installed for about £200 more than I could buy it for online

The remote roller doors are great, give you 2 to 4 inches wider opening and are draught proof. Only downside is you need space above the opening for the roller door and mechanism, about 300mm. depending on the manufacturer.

Securoglide roller doors I think are the best , I should do , its what we fit as standard for rollers , quality kit as standard.

not cheap , but reliable and safe, remote control and has a police preferred security rating ,

Give S W S a call http://www.sws.co.uk/garage-doors/ they will probably have an installer near you.

Be wary of internet selling as I know of companies that trade for a year selling at cut prices , go pop, and start up again , some might see it as a deliberate policy , but it can be surprising how you often find the same director names and trading addresses crop up on new companies each year ,If they are going bust owing , tax NI vat etc they have a huge advatage over legit operations that are trying to do it properly.

try to investigate a companies claims with regard date of first trading , company numbers, Vat reg numbers, warranties , products , customer referrals etc and check up on them , don't just take their word.

I have only had one motor fail with a Securoglide , and that was 5months outside the 5 year warranty, they still replaced it FOC ,

If you go electric, make sure you get a manual override.

Also try and ensure the motor is not a tube version that is fitted inside the actual roll of the door.

i.e. A motor seperate to the door and linked either by gears or a chain.

Also ensure that you have a cut off microswitch external to the usual control panel, easier to adjust, stops them ramming the floor.

I had a tube motor that failed, luckily in the closed position. Pain in the rear to resolve.

Just can't keep out of this one.

I have 3, yes 3, Wayne Dalton sectional doors. That's it doors. Just doors. One set of horizontal runners and 2 opened screw kits. I've been on to the importer in France and if I ever get an answer on the phone I may be able to buy the missing bits.

Still I've probably got enough to fit one set.

And, of course none have the electric motor with them.

Sorry to hear you had issues Bob , but tube motors are very reliable and to be honest pretty straight forward to change ,

Secureoglide have manual operation overide as standard , battery overide optional , and also a manual external overide option if you have no garage acces door .

The motors have programmable limits stops ,with overshoot protection as well as a touch sensitive bottom strip so that it won't crush any thing if closed without checking the doorway is clear .

edit to add ,

some manufacturers fit internal spring mechanisms counteracting the weight of the curtain to ensure that motors don't get overloaded. ;)
