Norman Verona Posted May 29, 2012 Posted May 29, 2012 The banks must have their details. I can't see how they don't get caught and proscuted through small claims courts etc. Of course the banks could trace the money but may not end up with people. They probably won't and claim Data Protection as the reason. But, yes, they should be allowed to give details to the police and the police should prosecute. Nothing to do with small claims court where you will win but never get paid. Off with their right hands - that'll stop it. Quote
Exsandman Posted May 29, 2012 Posted May 29, 2012 When he went into the bank, it did not take them long to see that there was something suspicious about the account which was at Barclays BTW. When they listed the car again a couple of weeks later, He got his sister to contact em and same thing, this time with different bank details for a different name but still at Barclays. Ebay are not interested as they say the transaction was conducted outside of EBay, but the fact the scammers are using their platform to conduct their scams does not seem to bother them in the slightest. He handed over all the information to the police, but not sure they have done anything with either. I'll get an update, but need to be careful as at least the last time i spoke to him, SWMBO was not aware of what went down !! :( Quote
Dibby Posted May 29, 2012 Posted May 29, 2012 Police haven't got the time or resources to chase all these scams down. As soon as they shut one guy down, another 10 will spring up in his place. Why on earth did your mate part with his money before seeing the car? Leaving a couple of grand somewhere on the internet for 5 days on a promise of someone you'ev never met? Would your mate be interested in buying some some magic beans off me? Any mention of paying before you physically see a car and take it for a test drive screams scam. Even after you've seen it, HPI check, pick through the paperwork, do your homework. Quote
Exsandman Posted May 29, 2012 Posted May 29, 2012 If we all applied logic, then the scammers would never dupe anyone. I asked him the same question and he said it looked so genuine with the Invoice on Ebay motors headed pdf , he did think wether he should do it or not and thought , don't be stupid it looks to real to be a scam !! Doh ! He was in a hurry, wanted to surprise the missus with a little car, good price. As crazy as it seems to you and me circumstances dictate that they will always catch someone, sometimes many. Dibby Posted May 29, 2012 Posted May 29, 2012 Yeah, it's easy to apply logic to these things from this side of the internet. Anyone can copy and paste an ebay logo and make a professional looking pdf in 30 seconds. If they send a thousand of these out and one person bites they've made their month's money. £2100, cash in the bank klnowing the police have little chance of catching, let alone convicting them of anything.
