tex Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 what do WF do to the engines they use in the cars they a. supply b. build at factory? are they bought as recon or do they use as they find them? just trying to find out what is the normal practice they use Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 (edited) Car/bike engine, SDV, modular etc? They've used all your suggestions over the years! New crate engines have been supplied, sometimes modified by Dunnel, (and others?) They used to buy Busa's and strip out the engine/gearbox etc. then sell the rest. Though they've supplied brand new Busa engines too! You can buy a palleted up set of MX5 mechanicals from them for your SDV kit. Not sure in the current range, but thought I'd better just double check the old 1800Q and 1600Q modular kits used to come with reconditioned 1800 Zetecs and 1600 CVHs respectively. In other words, just like most kit car companies that have been around long enough; they've done most things I'm afraid. So you need to check each individual vehicle out on its own. Stuart Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 My 1.8 Zetec (full modular kit purchased 1999) came with a new engine from Ford Industrial Power Products, already mated up to a brand new MT75 box. Quote
stephenh Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 Duratecs were new, supplied by Ford Power Products, units, to which Westfield fitted various throttle body and manifold sets, and Raceline shallow sump and flywheel. Can't speak for other power units. Quote
tex Posted March 26, 2012 Author Posted March 26, 2012 so theres no standard they use as such - seems as whatever whim they have... class act Quote
BEN99W Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 I don't think it's a matter of whim. They've been around for a long time, under differing ownerships, offering a range of products at differing price points. Different engines have come and gone in terms of popularity and availability and there have been variations in suppliers and willingness of suppliers to deal. I don't think is possible to expect a standard for the engine when the engines are so diverse in their variety and there's no way of predicting how the market will react. We mess around with our cars so much I doubt that there's many standard cars in existence anyway. Ben Quote
XTR2Turbo Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 so theres no standard they use as such - seems as whatever whim they have... class act A bit harsh. I would hazzard a guess that the vast majority of cars that the factory build will have new engines and gearboxes. The only recon part will be the diff. There are a few exceptions as highlighted such as where customers have supplied the bike engine for a busa build, a single donor build such as sierra or mazda or explicitly built and sold on a Q plate. tex Posted March 26, 2012 Author Posted March 26, 2012 youd never know tho would you unless you bought the engine or were specifically told the history.. could be owt.. Quote
XTR2Turbo Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 Call the factory and they will tell you if it was indeed a factory built car and the spec. Don't forget the factory are unlikely to risk SVA / IVA exemptions by fitting two reconditioned parts. As Sierra diffs are all reconditioned, if a car engine then very likely to be new. As bike engined cars often used a new freelander diff the engine could be supplied by a customer and would count as the reconditioned part. Quote
