D7PNY Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 Needing a spot of advice from more experienced folk on here... Recently changed fuel tank for a new one which is about 6-7 litres in size and has no sender. Car mainly used for sprints/hillclimbs and the odd blast on the road. Today was the first drive since fitting the tank (for mot and tune up of carbs). Good news is it passed no bother and is running better than ever. Bad news is I think I underestimated how little my range would be! I have some track tuition at knockhill next Monday and I'm really worried about fuel situation! Can't put old tank back on as it was leaking (which is the reason I got a new one to save trying to fix old one). What do others do with a thimble for a fuel tank? How many laps do you think I'm likely to get in before I need to fill up? Car is running a standard redtop on webber 45s by the way. Do I need to attempt to get my old tank fixed this week or do you think I'll be ok with filling up each time I come off the track? Will give knockhill a shout on Monday and see what they advise but if the consensus on here is a bigger tank then every second counts in getting it sorted, hence the post on here. Cheers, Dave Ps. To give you a laugh, reason I know range isn't good is I ran out of fuel on the way home Quote
SteveD Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 6-7 litres would get me 2-3 laps of anglesey in my sc cc honda elise Quote
Lurksalot Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 6-7 litres is a waste of time , barely enough juice to get your tyres up to temperature , and then the embarassment of being towed in after 3 laps , while Knockhill is only short , you can't do a track day worrying about fuel ecomomy Quote
Pistol Pete Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 It may affect you lap time if you have to stop and fill up half way through. Quote
SteveD Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 i allways fit if i can a 2-3 gallon sumped tank this gives you the option of running a low fuel ,ie 1 gallon then if you want to do a track day at leats you can do quite a few laps if you fill it ,but 6-7 ltres is takin the p*** Quote
pete g Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 fit a couple more tanks in there and link them together or fit a bigger one .small tank only anygood for sprinting Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 So about a gallon and a half, my standard, but with throttle body's XE used to be in single figures IIRC at trackday/sprint etc type pace. With no gauge, you'll presumably need to come in early too, or risk running out on track. Realistically will you risk more than two maybe three laps before refilling? Quote
D7PNY Posted March 24, 2012 Author Posted March 24, 2012 Cheers guys, Old tank was seaping from one small area and I did do a temporary fix with petrol putty which got me through an event. Could always do the same again if I can't get the tank steam cleaned and welded in time! Would prefer that tank anyway in fairness as I hate not having a fuel gauge! Dave Quote
salexander Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 Knockhill is only 1.3 miles. My 270bhp XE sprinter would do around 7mpg, so maybe a 7 litre tank isn't a total disaster? Quote

GreigM Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 Knockhill don't allow refuelling in the pit lane, so imagine they're not going to be overly thrilled. When pushing hard I get around 40 laps out of a standard tank (with leaving some spare as my sender is not very reliable), so reckon you'll get about 15....thats 15 minutes flat out Quote
thos Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 I've my first track day on a new small tank, but you're making me feel good about my 16litre tank! Quote
D7PNY Posted March 26, 2012 Author Posted March 26, 2012 Dropped off my old tank to get steam cleaned this morning so hopefully getting welded up tomorrow then I'll be ready to rock! Quote
D7PNY Posted March 27, 2012 Author Posted March 27, 2012 Got the tank back this morning Wasn't leaking from where I thought but all sort now! Just need to sort a new hose to connect to filler cap as the old one is knackered. Any advice on where to get something suitable at short notice? Do Halfrauds and the like stock anything suitable? Also, vent in tank has always just had a length of tube doubled over itself so I would rather get something up to scratch. Any recomendations for a vent valve? Cheers, Dave Quote
