chris7273 Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 Hi all, I have found a new toy for classic car navigation rally (as real amateur, just for the fun of driving). She is located near Portsmouth and I will drive back to Belgium with the car. So if you see this little toy between Portsmouth and Folkestone tomorrow in the afternoon : it will be me... Let's hope that the Midget will be brave and won't let me down So, please, wish me good luck ! Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 Good luck Chris. Always loved the looks of those classic, chrome bumpered, Midgets. Have fun with it. Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 'T' plate? Was it a rubber bumper model converted? If so it's a 1500 synchro first gear and Triumph engine. I was going to suggest that you carry plenty of oil for the front dampers - mine used up more in them than in the engine! Beautiful looking car anyway - I am almost envious. Bon voyage Quote
housebeautician Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 Years ago when i was in the MG car club, i saw one of these in the concourse section of a meet at Brands ( I think) i was gobsmacked at the control this old chap had, and i can honestly say i have never ever seen a car dance like it. Terrific little car and yours looks real nice Pleased for you and have fun Tony Quote
kirkyboy5 Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 I drove my car back from a little place called Bedford to Wolverhampton...best feeling in the world that trip was!!!! Shame the guy I bought it off was a little odd...... :p Dan Quote
dave_t Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 What a lovely looking car My dad had one when I was younger, and I loved to go out in it with the roof down It was probably what started off my enjoyment of open-aired motoring Quote
chris7273 Posted March 23, 2012 Author Posted March 23, 2012 I am impatient... Motco : Indeed, it's a rubber bumper one (with the 1500 triumph inside) that was converted a few years ago... the indicators are not the original ones. The triumph engine has a bad reputation, but if well treated (frequent quality oil changes) and not over-rev'd, it's a nice little cheap engine... I was planning to buy some "classic" oil on my way back but maybe I should also buy some damper oil... Do you think Halfords sell a damper oil ? Quote
Norman Verona Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 I have a '73 RWA (round wheel arch) model. It has the 1275cc A series engine and is not at all fast. But, I get tremendous fun driving it relativity slowly along our country lanes just enjoying the sun. I bought it from Bristol back to here. The UK side of the trip was OK, it did start raining near Portsmouth. However when I got off the ferry at Cherbourg it was raining hard. The tyres were about 20 years old but not at all worn - it was like driving on plastic blocks! To top of a perfect day I ran out of petrol (with gauge reading 1/4) near Rennes. An off duty gendarme gave me a lift into Rennes where I got a can of petrol and I got a lift with 3 young lads (looking for talent) back to the car. Got home about 2:00 in the morning. Captain Colonial Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 Good for you Chris, looks a lovely car, enjoy your trip! Looks like cracking good weather as well - great timing! Quote
fatbaldbloke Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 I restored this one from a barn find a few years ago. Technically it's an Austin Sprite, great fun. Have a nice trip. Quote
chris7273 Posted March 23, 2012 Author Posted March 23, 2012 Yes, good weather is expected ! Norman : what an epic trip, at least you have good memories. When everything runs fine, there's not a lot left to tell after a few years... FBB : nice interior, very nice... Another important point : I have to find a name ! My Westfield was named Wendy by its former owner and I decided to keep it... My wife suggests "Bridget"... but "Morissette" could be good too... Suggestions ? Quote
