Gazza Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 (edited) We all enjoy someone gunning the engine just to hear how agressive it sounds, so... here's a graphic taster of the sheer BRUTALITY of an 8000bhp 'fuel' (ie. Methanol & Nitro') motor... not 93dB(A) @ 1m, more like 193 @ 100m when he gives it a little tickle .. Roll-on ALL the racing seasons .... can't wait Edited March 12, 2012 by Gazza Quote
markcoopers Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 I spannered for a weekend on one of those, burnt my fingers every time on the clutch plates while removing them. Some of the stories/bits of destroyed metal that come out of the engine after a fully lit pass are to be seen/heard to be believed. Will we see you at the POD this season then Gazza? Quote
Gazza Posted March 12, 2012 Author Posted March 12, 2012 (edited) Hiya Mark - Respect to you... I'd PAY (well almost) to crew for a race weekend! Well I'm currently working in Singapore for 3 yrs but we are coming home for a couple of weeks at Easter so I might just squeeze in a day trip to the Pod with my son. I really miss it ... I've marshalled at the Singapore F1 (which is great) but would actually swap it for the Euro Finals once in a while ... thats the way the bug gets you eh? Edited March 12, 2012 by Gazza Quote
cidersurfer Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 I've seen a fella bang his head on the fence as a top fueller went by on full chat. He commented that it wasn't THAT loud during the burnout but his reflexes took over during the pass to stop his eardrums exploding! We were stood at about 1/8th mile so he didn't last long! I've got an top fuel con rod on my desk at work as a fruit holder! Quote
markcoopers Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 On the burn out they run with only 1 fuel pump and a mechanical throttle stop, a pin that physically limits the butterflys in the blower to about 1/4inch opening. Even so the speed at which the air is sucked in can cause it to cool so quickly that any moisture fets instantly frozen and can freeze the throttle open.....hench the de icer you see being squirted over the mechanism in the burn out and staging process. After reversing back you will see the crew remove the pin and show it to the driver, along with the shoot pins so that he knows he has control......well sort of. Quote
Uncle Fester Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 I'm not especially into drag racing, but these things are just awesome and then some!! :o They're physically impossible to watch without jamming your fingers in your ears and make F1 cars sound like a hair drier. Quote
markcoopers Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 They're physically impossible to watch That will be the CS gas bye product from the exhausts then. Quote
XTR2Turbo Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Haven't been to Santa Pod for a while - got a bit frustrated after attending a few rain disrupted events. But if you haven't seen / heard Top Fuel in action definitely try and get along to a meet. My favourite class is still the road legal 'Custom Car Street Eliminator' such as John Sleaths Audi. Quote
markcoopers Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Saab 99 version of the same was pretty trick, and Andy robinson ran a pro mod in street spec one year as well.....that was fun. Quote
