rocket_rabbit
I think someone has mentioned second hand slicks. A bloke running somesort of batmobile kit car at a track day I went to told me he was running used slicks in his race series with great success! I know JeffC has used 2nd hand tyres and it just seems to be a good way of saving money. Last time I had a look at V70s, they were ludicrous prices. SteveD
trouble with secondhand race tyres is you dont know the age of them or how many heat cycles they have had ,and i need soft tyres as race tyres are usually harder compounds and are no use for sprinting or hillclimbing they will never give you the grip ,so they will not give me the feedback i need as i will be doing 2 maybe 3 laps at a time when testing ,anything more and its false feedback
gixermark
Buy the 2nd hand slicks with your head Steve, wacky some softener one then... Do a 5/6 lap stint initially to get heat into the carcas, then do your shorter 2/3 lap stints to try set up changes. If I was going to be running slicks in competition, I'd want to be testing on slicks rather than a treaded tyre as it will make the balance and feel of the cr totally different, also harder race or rally slicks will be perfect for testing, sprint slicks or even soft/superrsoft traded tyres will go off in no time while testing... Unless very careful obviously I'd be more concerned about getting the same construction of ty you'll ultimately use ie. Cross ply or radial... also sizes if possible... The later being the tough find
SteveD
the idea was in using v70 if i didnt trash them i could use them for wets maybe i have not run on slicks properly for about 8 years since i had the vx westy and caterham which i ran on avon's for 3-4 years (NOT THE SAME TYRES)
gixermark
Mmmn, in my limited psonal experience of v70s in the wet Steve they are not great, I found 888s better in the wet, marginal though.. And on different cars.. So very hard to give direct comparison. I'd keep an eye out on uphill racers for tyres... You see Michelin race wets come up 2nd hand which are a damn good bet too... Or if you manage to find a set of 2nd hand spint tyres, get em cut for wet/damp days. It's unlikely the slicks you end up with will be similar enough size to the v70s tobe a plug and play alternative in the wet anyway with respect to heights if nothing else... If only avons were about half the price they were, we (within reason) could buy what we need/want... They are bl**** expensive :-(
gixermark
Having said that, if you did go for supersoft kumho's now and tested when it's cooler and managed not to trash them (tough) ! You could then get them cut into a race wet pattern for the wetter days... Tony at south shore would do that for you (most likely free of you buy your threes there)
