New Westy Owner

The Crafty Carpenter

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, after much deliberation about 20yrs  i've finally bought my first Westfield, it's a 2002 plate wide-bodied version with a 2.0 redtop in it, mated to a Cossie box and Quaife diff, other than that i think it's pretty much standard, though seeing so many different variants of trim and engines what is standard???. Anyway I've put a deposit on the car and am picking it up Monday, I've checked the weather! and hopefully it should be a dry drive home, i have so many questions to ask but won't clutter up this thread, i just wanted to say high and am looking forward to attending some events and meeting fellow westy owners, is there anyone around the Gloucester area?

Regards Dave

Howdy Carpenter, I don't think you can call any Westy standard unless it is an original factory built one. Redtops with carbs is a very popular and widespread engine choice but there again you may have Webers and I have Dellortos with my Redtop.

Dave,

Not wishing to teach you to suck eggs and have no idea what previous similar cars you have driven or if this one is well set up or not, but please please take it easy to start with.

I am not questioning your driving skills, but from experience of picking up new cars, it is only much later that you realise one of the tyres has a crack in the side wall or is very old or is a different pressure, or the ride height was set wrong etc etc....and then on a damp rutted road you break and have a big moment or worst.....just some advice to consider that's all.

I'll add my hellos as well and lightly echo Mark's comments above, which I would with driving any high performance car for the first time. Like every professional and any good driver, take your time to gradually learn your new car's limits and quirks before pressing it too hard. Westfields are great cars, but they are very direct and can expose either the level of skill of their owners or flaws in the road quite quickly.

I've only had a couple of hair-raising moments in ten years, but one early on was way overcooking a roundabout on a quiet early morning blat and doing a complete 360 spin into what would have been oncoming traffic if there was anyone else on the road - I hadn't noticed the patch of spilled diesel. If I hadn't been pratting about, I would have seen it and not acted like a twit.

So have fun, ease into it, and stay alert - this country needs more lerts! Hope you make it to Stoneleigh in May, and have fun!

Thanks everyone for the replies, appreciate the info about taking it easy, i know you can get carried away and it's been a while since i've been in a rear wheel drive, i've had 4WD for the last 8 years along with FWD cars before that, I'm old enough to have had MK1 & MK2 Escorts first time round the last being a 2WD Cosworth powered MK2, that was too lairy in the wet for me so I sold it, so I'm well aware of how easy you can get caught out, It's going to be a steady drive home for me, thanks for the link to the meets will try and come down to the next one, Julian i have a list of parts I'd like  , is there anyone local who can have a look over the car for me when i get it back, am sure everything is ok just be reassuring to know. :)

Dave. Just wanted to say welcome aboard. I am also new on here although I don't drive a Westie (part built one 15 years ago, but that is another story). Been to a couple of the club meetings at the Golden Heart and I reckon if you could get to the next one, you would have plenty of willing volunteers to give the car a good once over. They are a really great bunch of guys and gals and would make you very welcome. Let's face it, they made me feel welcome with a GBS Zero, so you are bound to be OK! ;)
