sweet orange Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 Sorry if this is an old question, but this morning i applied for my tax disc on line..(previousy sorn). I pays me money, all done from the 1st of the month. I notice the small print... may take upto 5 days to arrive. Am i breaking the rules by not displaying a valid tax disc? This seems just the situation the old bill would love to do us on if they got a chance. Anyway i intend to have a blast if it stays dry. Norman Verona Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 Unless it's been changed the offence is for not displaying a valid RFL disc. However, I've been stopped and having proved the car did have a current RFL disc, even though it wasn't displayed I've been told off and gone on my way. Doubt you'll be prosecuted if it's paid, even if you are breaking the law. Quote
Geoff101 Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 If you've renewed online they give you a few days grace during which you're allowed to drive it but not sure about coming off sorn. Failure to display tax is a separate offence to not having any and I'm told is just a non-endorsable £60 fine. Someone with better knowledge of the law can probably confirm or correct. Quote
Mid life crisis Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 I would guess that if you are on the move, and not making too much progress. Provided you have a tax disk holder on the screen you shouldn't get stopped. If you come across a traffic car the ANPR should stay quiet and show the car is taxed. I will be in the same boat as you at the end of next week, and will be driving the car on the road at the first opportunity. Quote
Blatman Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 I wouldn't worry about it. I haven't displayed the current tax disc on any of my bikes for well over a decade. I've been stopped a couple of times in that period. When asked, I say I have it at home to prevent it getting nicked and all the associated hassle of reporting it stolen to the police who can't do anything about it anyway. I have never yet been fined or even questioned any further... Quote
Fangi0 Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 Had the same dilemma this week. The offence is not displaying the licence so strictly speaking we could get done for it. However, if you go to the post office they do it there and then and off you go. I did that on Wednesday Quote
SteveD Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 if you read it, it gives you 14 days for it to arrive and if the feds check if you are stopped it will flag up that its in the post and done online , so no offence is comitted not even failure to display Quote
BigRuss Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 Are you sure it's 14 days? I just looked on direct.gov.uk as I'm in the same boat and it says 5 days Quote
RedditchJay Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 When you renew on line it emails you a letter / receipt.... carry that with you.... wont have any issues... any PNCR camera will pick the car up as taxed as linked to DVLA / VOSA database Quote

Dave the Sparky Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 Did mine this week online for the van, had it parked on main roads in cities/towns all week with no disc and not had any issues, once its paid, its paid, drive on sir.... Dave Quote
Darrell O'Neill Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 i spoke to a traffic sgt on this very subject the other week. Take a copy of the reciept from the DVLA with you and show it if you need to. Unless you are being an A*** to the copper or been stopped for being an A*** on the road, nothing will be done... Quote
Darrell O'Neill Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 ooh, and there's me expecting a$re to be controlled by the swear filter Quote
sweet orange Posted March 3, 2012 Author Posted March 3, 2012 Thanks for the advice fellas. I like the excuse of not wanting the disc stolen and keeping it at home. There is no windscreen on mine, the tax disc holder is fixed near the gear stick on the tunnel, so it cant be seen as i drive by anyway. Looks like its going to rain until the bl00dy thing turns up. Remember the tyres prefer warm tarmac, so take it easy this spring. Quote
Bob Bobbleton Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 In 12 years of tearing round North Yorkshire and Europe on superbikes, Ive never had the tax disc on the bike, always at home. Boys in blue dont mind, when you explain to them, they get nicked, fall off, or get wet etc etc, in fact some dont even seem to notice theres no tax disc, as usually before they pull you, theyve checked your tax mot and insurance anyway. I always do mine last day of the month online, and usually get pulled entering work by the Security guards, who check each vehicle for personal ID, car pass, and tax. Usual reply its in the post, ive got the email on my phone for receipt shuts them up... Its about 7 quid or used to be if you lost one anyway... Gives the Rozzers something to focus on if your stopped anyway and usually clouds their judgement in looking at anything else ! Plenty of tax/mot/insurance ANPR vans out on the road these days, and all they need to see clearly is your reg. Bob Quote
