Doug Dastardly Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Hello again helpful folk, I seem to be taking more bits off the car than putting on right now. I was flicking through an old SEi manual when I noticed that fuel cap fitting should have the seal between the body and fuel cap, with just the ring under the body. When I fitted mine there were no instuctions in the newer manual and presuming that you wouldn't have a cork seal showing above the body, I fitted it below. So could this be a problem? Should I take it apart and change it? It's a FW body BTW. Thanks all, Doug Quote
Meakin Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Yes it has to seal I'm afraid. They check it in the IVA and MOT. To quote IVA: "15. A fuel filler cap must positively locate to the filler neck and incorporate an adequate sealing arrangement so that a fuel leak is not possible. 16. The fuel filler cap must either be tethered to the vehicle or be of a lockable type where the key can only be removed when the cap is locked or an automatically opening and closing" I'm not sure as I couldn't find it in the basic IVA you may also have to have a filler neck hole suitable only for unleaded. It wasn't required for mine but I was on old crossflow and the rules depend on age of engine. Car Builder solutions http://www.nfauto.co.uk/ sell the appropriate items and have an article on how to pass 16 if its not a lockable fuel cap. Hope thats helped Paul Quote
Doug Dastardly Posted February 21, 2012 Author Posted February 21, 2012 Thanks Paul, It's a proper IVA jobbie supplied by WF so the cap is tethered to pass 16. In terms of it being sealed the location of the cork seal above or below the body will make no difference as it will never contact the fuel. The filler has a neck which goes into the tank and is sealed with a short bit of hose. Doug Quote
Westford Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 If it's an aero style fitting then the cork gasket has no real sealing function on a Westie fuel wise. If it fits ok with no unsightly gaps, then I would say leave it as it is. Westford Quote
Mark (smokey mow) Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 You don't need a filler neck reducer for IVA, it was only ever in the SVA manual. It's pretty much impossible to buy 4star petrol now hence I guess the reason why it isn't needed for IVA. As for the gasket, I think it would probably only be needed for when the filler is directly fitted into the tank (such as this) where it's required to create a seal between the filler and the tank. On a westfield the seal is provided by the rubber hose that connects the neck of the fuel filler to that of the fuel tank, a seal or gasket in any position to the body is going to serve no function for making the neck or tank fuel tight and as such would be superfluous. Doug Dastardly Posted February 21, 2012 Author Posted February 21, 2012 Thanks Guys. So glad that's one bit I can leave alone. I'm really beginning to feel my lack of knowledge at this stage of the build. But there's only one way to learn I'll probably be posting daft questions quite often now...... Quote

Meakin Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 That's no problem. Glad I wasn't going daft over the filler neck thing as I couldn't find (as it wasn't there ) IMHO there's no such thing as a daft question when it comes to things about the IVA. I certainly learnt a lot from both this forum and going through the process myself. Keep asking. Quote
Doug Dastardly Posted February 21, 2012 Author Posted February 21, 2012 There's been a bit of bickering lately about the club but it's been invaluable to me. Thanks all 1 Quote
