Hi all,

I'd like to start collecting footage of my trackday and autotesting exploits, I'm also pretty keen on gathering GPS data so I can have some in screen graphics for speed/track position and laptiming.

I should point out that i have neither an iphone or android phone, just a standard company Nokia (dull but free :t-up:).

As far as i can see the best option appears to be a Contour GPS coupled with a roll-bar mount. All in, about £300.

I'm interested if anyone has any opinions or experience of these cameras - and of course any alternatives...

Cheers,

Mark

I hear a lot of good reports on the gopro cameras but I don't believe they do gps. Don't know how good the gps in the camera you mention is but looking at the gps info from the iPhone apps its a bit of a gimmick and not an alternative for proper data logging

GoPro make very good cams, we use them on the mountain bikes and they stand up to crashes ... but like you say, no GPS.

Why not buy an Android phone/ iphone with a mount and bung your works SIM in it? That's what I did to ditch the museum piece Nokias they hand out here. It'll cost the same as your contour GPS thing and you can phone people on it too

I thought about buying a phone, are there "solid" mounts available? Suction cups are obviously out..

Wow, they seem to have gone up in price!

I was looking at them on ebay just before christmas and they were £140 for the GPS version. Gone up £100!!!

There's got to be someone making them. Type it into google, see what comes up

I think the reason I'm pulling away from a phone based option is that I could leave a dedicated camera on the car all the time (wire it to the battery), then its always ready for action...

I'm a big fan of Gopro and currently have two. The let down on the older cameras was the quality of the inbuilt mic which has now thankfully been adressed on the new Hero2. That has an external mic port so no more wind noise, the video quality is excellent, I never worried about GPS or data logging as the unedited video is clear enough to read all the gauges on the dash.

I had a bullet cam set-up before that but I tired of all the trailing wiring it required and the DVR didn't like getting wet, in contrast the Gopro's waterproof and I can fit it in under a minute so it's easy to remove if parking in a public place to stop it being pinched. There's also some great videos on youtube of them strapped to rockets and filming from the edge of the atmosphere, just shows how bulit proof they are.
