Norman Verona
I can get my BDR out in about 2 hours. It's easier due to the "through the bonnet" manifold so only one pipe to remove rather than 16 manifold nuts some of which can't even be seen. About the same time to refit if I was in a hurry but I always seem to take all day as I clean this, move that and generally play about. SootySport
Best start learning how to do these jobs yourself, £900 will buy you a lot of tools.

Mark (smokey mow)
They might have managed it quicker if they'd have gone for a 4 door car rather than a
s2rrr
It all depends on what you asked/agreed the mechanic to do and at what rate of charges per hour plus any parts. My view is that £900 seems very excessive for just an engine and box out and in. But is that all that was done. If there is other work involved that should have been made patently clear and understood. You may have been ripped off or you may have been charged correctly for a work content you may not have fully been aware of. It may have been adviseable to have an agreed estimate before the job started to avoid any such issues. But thats easily stated after the event. A detailed bill and breakdown of charges will clear that up. Bob
SteveH
I must be slightly slower than Terry, I'd say three hours out and four back in for my dura/quaiffe setup. £900 does sound rather costly, not many indie workshops are charging more than £50-60 an hour round my way and there are plenty that are more like £40; dealers cost more obviously but I assume you didn't give this job to those guys! Matt Seabrook
We did a clutch on a Tiger a couple of years ago which was box in and out as well as an MOT at the same time. This needed the engine and box to be removed and refitted to do the job. The whole job only came in at just over £300.
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman
Without knowing their actual hours worked & rate, plus an itemisation of what was done, it's all a bit idle speculation really; yes, on the face of it, it does sound a lot. I know, pre dry sump, and when the alternator was on the exhaust side, I used to be able to remove my engine, then 'box in about 1 hr 40. (I'd had a lot of practice at that point ) back in, dressing cables etc took longer, probably a good two and a half to three hours, except once, when the engine just wouldn't line up on the box, which took much longer. HOWEVER, the time I foolishly listened to all the advice telling me to refit engine and box as one unit was an absolute nightmare. Ending up taking six hours, and involving me steadily stripping more and more off the car and engine to get them to fit past the tunnel hoop and clear the top scuttle rail. (Yes, I know others manage fine, but without cutting my hoop off, mine doesn't, though the hoop is, er, somewhat lower profiled than the factory intended )
