What Would You Expect To Pay For Engine/box In And Out?

Just had my gearbox refurbed so the engine and box has been out and back in by my local mechanic.

I am going to pick the car up at the weekend. What sort of cost would you be expecting to pay for the work? Not including the refurb.

Cheers

Funny enough just having this conversation on a PM. From driving my Westfield into the garage to having the engine mounted on the stand I can do it in 2 hours, but that's leaving the gearbox behind. Relaistically and obviously depending on engine and the competency of the garage I'd have said 4-5 hours for engine and box for an out and back in again.

depends on spec and components used ,some can take 5 hours just to remove

also, did you confirm the garage hourly rate ? the guys who woerk on my Landrove charge £30.00 per hour BUT the guys who work on the Porsche charge £65 per hour.............. just because it has a Porsche badge...... and maybe some odd additional special tools........

And VW/Audi dealers are mostly over £100 per hour.

But before you all start shouting about rip off dealers let me give some explanation. When I ran dealership workshops I had 4 mechanics for 1 admin person. That included the manager, receptionists, foreman and warranty clerk.

Most VW/Audi dealerships have more admin people than technicians due to the tasks they are set by the dealership contract.

It took me 2.5 hours to remove the engine/box on mine. That was with 2 people and a lot of photo taking and tomfoolery.

My trick was that I took the throttle bodies of first thereby not spilling any fuel or muching about with throttle cable.

Putting it back in should take 2.5 hours too, maybe a little longer because everything has to be torqued/thread locked/copper greased (depending on where it is and hwat it does).

Not including the Gearbox refurb, £350 - 400?

The spec is a Duratec with a Quaife sequential.

I was thinking closer to the £500 mark myself. Just been billed over the £900 mark. Requested the full breakdown before I pay as I thought it was too steep!

Cheers folks.

900 quid!!!! ouch.

unless ofcourse theyre charging 100 quid plus vat (per hour)like some mainstream garages do? But surely you asked their hourly rate before getting the job done didnt you?

Normally charge £40. With labour coming out at £705 quid it works out at 17.5 hours. Seems excessive.

Hmm, even assuming it's actually £40+vat that's still over 14 hours, I think that's 8 hours too much for a Westfield for a trained mechanic in a garage workshop with engine crane and all the right tools to hand... even assuming a lack of knowledge of this particular car it's not rocket science to undo hoses and wiring connectors and then unbolt all the mounting bolts and pull it out!

From memory I could take my 1800 zetec out in 2 hours and put it back in took about 1 hour plus another hour to fill/check the fluids and run up to temp to sort out airlocks etc

2 hours out and 3 in is what I used to work on with my Duratec including dry sump hoses etc and it was fitted with Quaife seq box

its like anything though, people need to earn a living and have bills / overheads to pay........

sounds expensive but you might be able to work a cash deal ? I did on the last Porsche job i had done, he waved the V.A.T which knocked £140 of the bill as I was paying cash ............. and didnt need a receipt {just an exhaust blow to repair}

But is the 14 hours just for the engine labour or gearbox refurb also?

Time will depend upon the engine / chassis etc

It was 5 hours to take the engine and gearbox out of my Sport 2000s. And that was excluding the hour it took to separate a seized exhaust joint at the bottom of the header.

On the sport chassis lots of other parts need removing such as ARB, dry sump tank, alternator ... Basically the whole front needs stripping away.
