langy
In fairness, I've done the string operated windscreen wipers. I was pulling the strings while my friend was driving, IIRC it was absolutely lashing it down
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman
Back as a poor student, friend of mine had some ancient seventies Datsun with a collapsing back on the passenger seat, so he used to keep a huge block of polystyrene on the rear seat, to prop it up. Was all right unless he stopped suddenly, then you and the seat back would swing forward against the seat belt, only to flop back against the polystyrene with a thud. When I was 18 or so my brother had a bright orange VW Beetle that had dodgy wipers. I borrowed it one time to take my then girlfriend to an indoor motorcycle trial at the NEC. We had to do the string wiper trick on the way there.... The bit that capped it off for me: In the centre of the trials arena was a similarly bright orange coloured bug to the one we had travelled in....It was being ridden over by the competitors..... It was in better nick than the one I'd just driven down the M6...

Man On The Clapham Omnibus
A neighbour of mine fixed the exhaust on his HB Vauxhall Viva with a box spanner as a link pipe...
