Full Face Helmet For Trackdays

Hi All,

Got my first track day booked for the 4th April and wanted to get a helmet rather than rent one as I plan to do a few track events.

I've seen lots ranging from £60 upwards, if I'm not planing on racing or sprinting just yet is there a problem with going for the cheaper one? I'm more concerned of misting visors etc...

Can anyone recommend a good starter one? One's I've seen are:

Any advise?

The best advice is to get one that feels comfortable - everyones head is shaped differently so in my experience(limited) you do need to try a few on. That said most online vendors will do a sale or return basis i believe

I use a Hedtec http://www.hedtec.co...dtec_helmet.htm and got good service from them

Kevip6, forget about price, it has nothing to do with it. Put another way, if you turn over on a track day your helmet needs to protect you as much as if you'd turned it over in a race.

Get a good approved helmet, whatever the price.

Leaving aside cost/MSA regs etc. etc. you'd be surprised if you've never tried a helmet before, just how much they vary in terms of head shape: there really is no substitute for actually trying them on to find which fits best and is most comfortable to wear. You may find the helmet you "fancy" just doesn't work for you!

FWIW, when I bought a helmet to go with my aeroscreened car I had no plans in a million years of competing :d, but I bought an OMP Integrale, which was MSA approved. Eighteen months or so later, I found myself doing my first sprint, and being glad that at least I didn't have to buy another helmet!

^^^^ I agree with the above, make your decision based on what fits best and is comfortable.

When I bought my helmet I made the trip to Demon Tweeks, simply becasue of the range they had. I spent a good couple of hours in there and must have tried on 20-30 helmets in different sizes and styles, where for one manufacturer I needed a small, for others I was a medium.

I know some of the on line retailers will send you a couple and then you keep the one that fits best, but if you're able to I'd reccomend trying to get to a store to try a few. Not easy I know as we don't excatly have much choice here in essex .

Would there be a good selection at Stoneleigh? I went in 2006 buy can't remember how much stuff was actually for sale?

I could always hire one on the 4th April with a view to buying there?

PM or phone Playskool, perhaps they will send you a couple of helmets to try. Bought mine from them and I happy with it. The Algar boys are quite ameanable.

Sounds good, I'll rent/borrow on the 4th April and then look to buy at Stoneleigh in May then. Thanks for the help!

i use a cheapy bike one but luckilly for me it fitted fine. it has some sort of gold seal of aproval. the fogging thing wasnt too bad once i got used to wearnig it and not doing stupid things like having damp hair or breathing on the visor.

one thing i didnt consider was how cold my chin and neck got. so i bought a bikers balacklava thingy which made the helmet a little tighter but nothing major so it might be worth consdering this when buying. also i found my sunglasses were a bit frustrating and there was no option to change the visor so again worth considering.

I always use a balaclava. Stops the helmet getting quite as sweaty and gross on hot days.

I started off with a bike helmet, then when I wanted to compete had to go and buy a new one. Also, aren't there some track days that won't allow bike helmets now?

Given the cheaper prices these days I'd recommend getting an MSA ready snell approved one.

If it states it's Snell SA 2005 or 2010 then are they MSA approved? I think FIA approved is separate to this?
