Sorry Guys Another Wifi Question.

Really sorry I know this is a car not a computer forum but I've always found the answer here before and in a language I understand!

As a result of internet issues recently my provider sent me out a new router. I'm not convinced it was the only problem but hey ho everything seems to be working ok now.

My only problem is I cannot get on the internet with my pocketpc via wifi. I've put in the wep code and it says it's connected. I get 4 or 5 little green bars in the bottom right hand corner of the screen and it says the connection is excellent.

When I open internet explorer and type in a web address I get a message box titled Internet Explorer which says "The page you are looking for cannot be found" it doesn't matter what page I choose.

I've tried different settings in the wifi set up but the one I have now appears to be the only one which gives me a connection.

It worked perfectly well with my old router. Will the new one be using a different type of connection that's not compatible?

Any thoughts?

Sounds like it's not picking up the IP address settings cleanly. Are you running with a new connection or the original router settings?

Can you see the settngs on the hand-held? if so the Dafault Gateway should be the Address of the router.

I had a similar problem when I changed my modem - turned out to be an explorer setting - cant think where as I stumbled on it - it was to do with resolving DNS . It would ping the router and it you gave it an ip address of a web site it would find it , but not if you gave it the web site name . Odd and I don't understand how changing the modem caused this . Hope this rings a bell with someone who might be a bit more specific ( win 7 in my case)

WEP code? Are you sure? Most routers these days use WPA-PSK. If you've entered a WEP code and it's expecting WPA that might be an issue.

To test if it's a DNS issue, open a command prompt by holding down the windows key and pressing the letter R. This will open a small window on the bottom left of the screen. Type cmd in the box and click OK.

A black and white window will open. Type the following

ping w w w . bbc.co.uk (but without the spaces...)

If the pings fail, check for the IP address of the BBC web site. It'll be in the top line of the output after you tried the command above. Type that number in to the address bar of Internet Explorer instead of typing the web address. If the web site opens with an IP address but not when you type the web address, then there is a DNS problem.

Sorry, I'm not sure what the difference is between wep wap etc I've tried all the options on the pocketpc; open, shared, WPA only way i can get connection is using authentication type WPA-PSK, data encryption WEP, my router instructions refer to it as my wireless key.

Not sure if any of these help

I found the bit where you can let it choose it's own ip address or enter one,

choosing its own (it doesn't seem to maintain it, keeps flipping to 0.0.0.0 and back)

Hi, had a similar problem when I changed from a Netgear to a Belkin router. I kept the same WEP security setting thinking I didn't have to change the settings on the wireless devices in the house but or some reason I don't understand, some worked fine but others don't. The solution seems to be to enter the WEP key into the wireless device that's not working not as the text phrase (like abcdef0123..... etc) but to enter it as the equivalent hexadecimal '13 hex digit pairs' (on the first picture of your screen above). So on my son's Ipod I put 33 b8 79 etc and it worked straight away.

The hexadecimal WEP key is displayed on the wireless settings of the router.

Hope this helps....

Do you need to put your new router into 'pairing mode'? Perhaps try manually adding the MAC of your Axim into the routers allowed device list if it supports it. It does look like it's just ignoring your device from that allocated IP - a 169.x.x.x is often a self-allocated 'I give up, nobody will talk to me' address that Windows generates. Also explains the lack of any DHCP offered values for DNS etc.

Mind you, your other stuff is working so probably not that.

Can't find anyway off adding it to the router or a pairing mode. It just went straight on to the old router and all our laptops phones etc just went straight onto the new one. I give up. I only use it for a bit of night time surfing as it's a bit quicker than the kindle so it's not the end of the world.

I'm no expert at all but I have some older devices that will not work until I change my router settings to wep. They do not recognise the new encryptions.

Maybe try turning off the security on your new router and see if you can connect
