Norman Verona Posted January 27, 2012 Share Posted January 27, 2012 I agree wholeheartedly. having been the target of anti-sematism I can accept the proposal. we have "friends" in Sheffield who, when we first met commented that "we hate Jews" (not knowing our religion). I asked how many they knew. None was the answer. So how can you hate people who you've never met? and actually you do know some, US. Ah, we didn't know you were Jewish, we didn't mean you. That attitude make me even more annoyed. However, you must look beyond the bare statements and beliefs. The same person "hates" "*****". However, he will then go on to tell you that the best person he ever employed was a "****". I always challenge him on this and, to his credit, he will admit that he's just going with the flow. The best bloke I've ever met just never saw colour, race or religion, he saw people. He either liked them or he didn't. When he died there were hundreds of West Indian, and Asian mourners at his funeral along with his "white" friends. I try and emulate him (I've always seen people first) but it sometimes gets difficult mainly because of the prejudice emanating from the other person. Does that help popcorn sales? "Cut us and you will find all our blood is red." That has stuck with me ever since. If anybody had reason to be prejudice against another race it could have been him but he wasn't. I don't care which religion, race or colour a person is I will treat them as I find them. XTR2Turbo Posted January 27, 2012 Share Posted January 27, 2012 Ok to boost popcorn sales ..... but it is clearly possible to identify traits and behaviour based on age, sex, occupation, marital status, nationality etc and assume these will be exhibited until proven otherwise. The insurance industry does it everyday So does the marketing industry. Are they racist, sexist, prejudiced, ageist or just scientific in their analysis of behaviour? Is it only politicians who want to defy reality? The reality - wherther genetic or cultural - leads to distinguishing skills, aptitudes, and behaviours. Blacks are better sprinters, females have less ability to perceive in 3d than men, men are more likely to be colour blind ....... we could all add to this list. Does that make us prejudiced or informed ;-)) Prefudice can favour or disadvantage. The problem perhaps is where one repeatedly and selectively biasses either negative or positive prejudices with agenda. If I advertise a car for sale and put at the bottom - 'no canvassers' - am I prejudiced because my experienve is they will be wasting my time? Indeed is answering the question in the OP prejudiced in itself? You are saying YES or No based on your view of a social / economic group. Musicians are considered a bad risk for motor insurance. Does that mean that they all work late into the evening and then drink and drive? I class Britain as one of the most xenophobic nations in the world. Proof being that the Daily Mail exists. I feel quite fortunate that I have socialised with people from all around the world despite being not very well travelled at all. On Wednesday I went with a Bloke for his first trip into a Pub! A few weeks back there was another guy who'd only recently come to the UK saw his first snow!
