Rab (bombero) Reid
Not sure if this has been posted before. Matta
I like MachineMart. I've just ordered a new tool cabinet/box combo from them. They're as cheap as anyone on the net/fleabay and I can go and look at it on Saturday before I pick it up. Unlike ForthTools, who advertise their 'new' warehouse in Kircaldy and have never been open when I've arrived - they've lost my business! peterg
on my list. thanks for that! I hope you don't expect that harness to fit a Westfield, se7ens require much shorter back straps that just about any other car which is why nearly all harness makers do specific models for these cars
Mark (smokey mow)
Worth double checking the length of the shoulder straps if thinking of buying. Most saloon harnesses are too long for westfields as they're designed for having the mounting points in the back seat and not directly behind your shoulders. It's a bit more money but the Luke G-Max is good value and can be bought for £55-£60 in Westfield specific flavours

peterg
I know they are more expensive but a well known Westfield committee member does FIA approved harnesses... http://www.plays-kool.co.uk/acatalog/FIA_Harnesses.html

John K
Are Machine Mart still OK guys to deal with? I need to start kitting out the Bat Cave and I was wondering about getting all the shelving and tool store from here. So good the hear it is quality stuff. What about the actual tools themselves..? I'm a bit of a snob or sucker (depending on your view) for a good brand of tool. All my house building stuff is Bosch Blue and I have battered (and I mean battered, this was not a put up some shelves project) the eck out of them for 6 years and no probs. So I was going to look at branded tools - put if folk advise that MM tools are OK I might save myself some pennies to spend later on 98 RON

Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman
Variable, I'd say. I've use some of their dearer ball bearing slider tool cabs and they've been fine. PArts washer - one of my most heavily used tools, is also OK, though did need replacing after nearly ten years of use and abuse! (But gave good value in that time). Likewise, my Clarke engine crane, engine stand, Mig Welder and various air tools and hand tools have given great service at a good price, particularly when VAT free days are taken into account. However, their budget jig saw (got to avoid keep dragging my 110 Volt Bosch Pro job + transformer home from work), is utter carp. I also got their roughly £100 router, to help make some moulds up with, (so one up from entry level) and that is also carp. (Both are very inaccurate, in the jig saw's case, it's almost impossible to cut a straight line - even using a hard edge to run the saw along, you can see the blade wander and twist. The router just isn't made accurately enough - surfaces that should be perfectly flat are bowed, so any change in hand pressure results in the cutter moving off vertical.) They just have too big a range to give an overall rating that's fair. Next VAT free day though, I will pick up a load leveller and a pack of ratchet straps. I just won't buy electric hand tools from them again. (But then I class myself as spoiled, as through work, i only really use Makita, De Walt and Bosch Pro tools). As far as hand tools go, mine are mainly Teng, which I rate very highly (note, one of our Traders, Tool Orders is a Teng distributor). I'd love to be able to afford Snap On through out, but that's just not going to happen! (Nor in truth am I a heavy enough user to justify it). But the Teng is excellent quality with good, in many instances life time guarantees. The other alternative for good priced, but high quality hand tools are the Halfords Professional range. (Or what ever they're calling it nowadays). Again, very good quality, and again, some items come with life time guarantees). As for shelving, depends what you want, but there are several Internet based shelving specialists selling light to heavy weight industrial shelving that is good value for money. Personally, I'd use one of these again, having used them at work before now. Incidentally, on the tool cab front, in addition to MM, Halfords frequently have some corking offers on their ranges. Just watch which range, (from whatever supplier) you're buying. I would only buy ones with decent ball bearing tracked drawers with a good load rating, for frequent use. ie weekend tinkering. The really cheap ones with friction slide drawers can be OK though, if it's just really occasional use. Handy as cheap storage for rarely used stuff. Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman
Just re-checking you're post, for anyone that didn't know, Bosch blue = Bosch Professional gear, while the green is normally the domestic.
blue ass fly
Are you too much of a snob to buy used Check classifieds for used snap on or mac toolboxes - theyre dirt cheap, made properly and will always resell if you want to Until theyre side by side you cant appreciate how flimsy some of the budget stuff is Drawers feel lovely in shop unti you fill them with tools
John K
Epic reply Dave, many thanks... I think you have confirmed what I already knew - buy cheap and you buy twice. Interesting to see you name checked Halfords Pro - I had discounted them on the assumption anybody can stamp Pro on something. My local store has some real nice deals on took sets at the mo - but I must resist on any major splurging until the last of the plasterboard goes up and the double glazing is ordered. Regards the difference between Bosch Green and Blue... When I got my first CSB 700 2 RE (no its not a motor bike, its a hammer drill) 26 years ago it was a Green Tool. But build quality is off the chart, a fully metal gear box (housing and innards) and it is still going despite drilling 1/2" steel and granite. I have recently suspected that original green was pro level stuff. Then Bosch realised most DIY''ers never really use the tools they buy so there was no point in making good stuff for home use. They then rebranded some Fischer Price Kids tools as their Green range and then recolored the Green to Blue for the serious folks.
John K
@ Steve C "Are you too much of a snob to buy used" Not at all, but with tools (like cars) it is hard to tell if they have been abused by a previous owner. I have no trouble getting stuff 2nd hand from folk I trust, but if I'm leaning full on onto a pry bar I want to know if somebody else has tried to lift an oil tanker with it previously and if it might let go and send me ass over tip.
