Hi guys,

Thinking of a family holiday somewhere west coast of France this year... Somewhere reasonable distance from Cherbourg (traveling from ireland)

Would like somewhere well geared up for your kids... But would like to be close to a town... Coast ideally but not essential

Anyone know of any good spots?

Google the Vendee, it fits your requirements. It's the strip of beach below Nantes. Even so, probably 2.5 to 3 hours from Cherbourg. Motorway all the way from Caen though.

A friend of mine has just bought a static there, if that's what your looking for I'll put you in touch.

Try La Grande Metarie in Carnac, not too far from Cherburg and great for kids. :t-up:

Mind you it must be close on 30 years since we were last there

thanks Guys.

appreciate the offer Norm, but will most likely haul ourselves down in the motorhome

Our kids quite like this place in the Vendee : http://www.domainelaforet.com/gb/situation-gb.html

Pitches are nestled amongst the trees. Not too commercial, but big enough to have the right mix of facilities. Nice bar and restaurant.

Maybe a bit too far from Cherbourg ?

Similarly I'm thinking about renting a place around the same region of north west and would appreciate any suggestions or general feelings on the good spots in the region (and where to avoid). Ideally we'll rent a holiday home with 2 bedrooms, kitchen, fridge, safe parking, and wi-fi (unfortunately I've got to work while on holiday)...but in general looking for somewhere with:

Nice places to walk (not too strenuous walks, will have little un in a pushchair)

Some decent places to visit by car within say an hour and a half drive

Ideally a nice beach within say 30/40 min drive.

Just a sleepy, picturesque place we can stroll around, soak up the sun etc...

Any suggestions of locations and/or websites to find places to rent?

Sorry for the thread hijack Mark

no worries at all Greig... more info the better :t-up:

I'd also be interested in general comments on weather etc... and whether it pays to go further south to help improve probability of better temperatures/less rain.... I'm not bothered about it being relaly hot... just woudl like to have it as warm/dry but not driving too far from port

Loads of good spots on South Coast of Brittany - Benodet and Quiberon are all geared for families with big wide sandy beaches and plenty to see and do - Good spot for touring when in Motorhome - France has lots of quiet aires and camp sites :)

Even south of the Vendee heading towards Bordeaux there are some great sites near the coast. We looked at going a few years ago but ended up buying a lodge here in Scotland so didnt go. I cant remember the names of the sites, but a few times we were in France we went through a company called Select Sites. The rest of the times we were there, we looked at the sites named in the likes of these companies websites and booked direct, as well as the ferries.

Dont know if there was much of a saving

Its a beautiful part of the world though with some good temperatures.

The Vendee is great around St Jean De Monts, miles of sandy beaches, hundreds of campsites to choose from.

The ones on the coast tend to be a bit crowded in high season, inland you get a bit more space, and cheaper.

Weather is usually great, but it's a bit further down than Carnac.

We did South Brittany/Vendee many times when the kids were young, they are 35 and 40 now, so they dont need us anymore

that look slike a 'proper' french campsite Tim - how long woudl you say the journey is from Cherbourg ? have you been recently ? much for your kids ?

Its hard to know whether to go to one of these inland sites.. or one closer to a coastal town etc... i imagine those more inland woudl be quieter.... just that you need to drive wherever you go on sightseeing etc

, does it have to Cherbourg? St. Malo would be much better. An hour to Rennes, another hour to Nantes and an hour to the campsite. Add another hour if your landing at Cherbourg.

cherbourg or roscoff seem to be the only option from ireland Norm (without going over to england first)

will keep researching :-)

It's a nice run down to Carnac from Roscoff, just under 100 miles.
