Captain Colonial Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 Don't normally go into this area of the boardroom, but thought this article from the Car & Driver website in the US was a quick, informative and interesting read on how HANS devices work. Quote
ianstewartshouse Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 Good article, Schroth have some good info also which i reviewed and it convinced me to buy one. How many are using one in WSCC? Ian Quote
Nick Algar - Competition Secretary Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 That's a very interesting acticle. Personally I have used one for 6 years and found them to be fine. There is a slight restriction in sideways head movement but it's not been a problem and well worth the peaces of mind  Quote
peterg Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 As far as the WSCC Speed Series is concerned, I'm not sure I've seen anyone using Hans yet*, In fact, I can't recall even seeing any of the top drivers in the British Hillclimb Championship using them either. I think cost is at least part of the reason since to use one effectively you may need to change the seat, the harness mount points as well as the harness itself and your helmet so cost is likely to be £1-2k and that's a big chunk out of someone's hobby for maybe 6 events a year! Edit, *apart from young Mr Algar or course... Quote
stephenh Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 I dont know of anyone using one in the WSCC Speed Series. There was a thread about HANS on the boardroom some while back, probably abouty a year or so ago. I dont know anything about HANS beyond what is in the article quoted above, except that my recollection form the previous thread was that it might be quite difficult to fit one to a Westfield in the correct and approved manner. IIRC iot has to do with the correct length and mounting points of the tethers? Maybe someone who has a better recollection of the previous thread, or who knows more about the instalation of HANS can comment? Must learn to type quicker!! Quote
peterg Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 HANS fitting guide here shows what is required, a lot of Caterhams are now being altered to allow this fitment but most people are returning their cars to Arch who made the chassis originally so that they can weld in the new mounts etc... http://www.msar-safety.com/pdf/HANS_Guide.pdf Quote
Nick Algar - Competition Secretary Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 It's come down quite a bit in cost recently, Helemts can be bought for only £219 ( I am sure you know where from ) and Hans devices are now under £ 500. You are right that it needs to be fitted properly, which is a bit more of an issue on a Westfield, but not impossible Quote
John Loudon - Sponsorship Liaison Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 I think Barney uses one? I seem to remember Richard Green using one when he entered as well Quote
westy turbo Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 I am about to get one, prob the sport one as i cant afford the pro, need to check on the pdf above,or if any pics from someone that fitted allreay.,Sorry Nick,my helmet was a present, if i new,i would have point them the right direction Quote
ianstewartshouse Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 Just in the process of fitting, bought new 7/16unf threaded inserts to weld into the correct position as identified in the PDF above http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/380129249524?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 I have bought JK composite seats and tried them out with the HANS fitted without harness on and they seem fine for space for the HANs I'll post when i get it finished (working on getting the engine running at the mo) Quote
westy turbo Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 Nice Ian,also in JK's,so ur pics will be more than helfull,so eyelets need to be higher in order to get the correct degrees? Quote
ianstewartshouse Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 No eyelets need to be closer together at the shoulder mounts lap mounts unchanged. You need to measure the distance from the back of your seat to the mounting for the shoulder eyelet and use the table in the PDF above to identify mounting position. I'll post some photos when I get the inserts welded Quote
westy turbo Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 Τhanks!sounds perfect then.TBH iam feeling that the HANS is a must! Quote
ianstewartshouse Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 Me too so gotta get it sorted! Quote
Nick Algar - Competition Secretary Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 Please be aware that scrutineers have been asked to particularly check welding on seat belt mounts following a very bad failure last year when both top mounts failed on a westie. They had been home welded and pulled straight off in the crash. Not aware go any problems with factory fitted ones. So if you change the mounts make sure it's done to a high standard. Quote
