Torqueman Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 Brilliant camera, only downside is the sound! Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 Brilliant camera, only downside is the sound! True, the Mark 2 includes a mic input in the many improvements. Not had a chance to test yet. TBH though, while they get used a lot for pro video - you see them all the time, just creeping into shot! They'd typically be edited in with either a backing track "covering" the audio up a bit, or if serious high quality sound is needed, a sepperate audio recorder is used. I've got a little self powere mic on order though, so going to have a go and see what it's like. For those handy with a soldering iron, the GoPro HD 1080 models with accessory bus, can have a lead made up so that you can hook a extra mic in via the bus. Quote

Hmm, guess I have to take a look at the Mark 2 then! Cant you post up a film with the new camer to "hear" the differnce? Quote

I'd be interested to hear the Audio with an external mic on the Hero2 also when you make a video. I've already got 2 Gopro's (a 960 and a 1080HD) which I use in a 3-camera set-up with a bullet cam and external mic, but I've been thinking of upgrading to the new one in the hope of getting some better sound recording for single camera use. Torqueman Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 Was checking the Go-Pro webbsite and could not see if the protective shell has an opening for the external mic. I cant see that. So how are you going to use that external mic? Drill a hole in to the casing so you can plug it in? Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 I did thi k about getting a skeleton case, but then the pas few times I've been out with the camera on its got a drenching from the vast amount of water R1R's seem to be able to suck out of innocent looking little puddles So instead, I've decided to drill the standard sealed case. (will try and get an O ring or something to help seal the plug where it goes through I'm just going to try an Audio Technica (self powered) Lavalier condenser mic and see how that goes. The idea is to put the mic in the boot box first off, as that seems to work for others. Currently with the built in mic, I get OK ish sound with the camera on the nosecone looking back, though the wind noise is a little dominant. With the camera on the rear wing, the sounds poor, mainly wind and rattle from the camera/case/mount combo itself. (a known weak spot). With only a little induction noise and almost no exhaust. Picture quality so far is fantastic though, even just "testing settings". Quite staggering how much better it copes with poor light than the earlier model. (though obviously at the expense of some picture noise). Will post some links up soon as I've had a chance to try the mic. (should have it Thursday or Friday). Just need the remote/viewer software then, and I'll be good to go. Hopefully that should be launched in Feb, subject I guess, to App Store approval. (Remote Wi Fi control and viewing via an iPhone).
