Steven (WE51STE)
At our last area meeting some of the blatting regulars we talking about getting PMR . Walkie Talkies for some car 2 car communication during ride outs. Do any of you have any experience of such items ? Can anyone make any recommendations as to which are the best ? The quoted ranges seem to be from a couple of KM to12 KM are these realistic ? Regards, Steve
Norman Verona
I bought a pair of credit card sized units about 7 years ago. We took them on a trip to Le mans but they didn't work as I couldn't hear them in the 7. Maybe the 7 was a tad too loud. I found them when destroying the old kitchen and tried charging them so I could use them for comms from the garage to the house. Didn't charge so on my recent visit to the UK I bought two new batteries from Maplin. Duly fitted and charged and ..... .. they still don't work. Maybe the larger units will be OK. As for range they will work over flat open countryside for several kilometers but much less in built up areas.
tex
midland G7 works well - but you will need headfones of a sort to be able to hear it- either full muffs or ear piece - G7 works with most intercoms too via an adapter cable which comes as an extra cheap enough

Captain Colonial
Now that's a dedicated area organiser...someone who is happy to listen to the inane drivel of his local members even when he's blatting!
Rab (bombero) Reid
I've been thinking about something similar (to be able to talk to another member or even my PX without shouting, lol). No experience of headphones with boom mic but would think that wind noise over the mic would be an issue. I bought a pair of secondhand BT Freeway PMRs and not tested them properly yet. I've ordered up a couple of cheap throat mics with PTTs from eBay to see how they measure up..
ajpearson
Well you can get a foam cover to go over the boom mike, we have them at work when we are hanging out of the helicopters and they work a treat. Remove all the wind noise at 100mph !! I have some cheap ones I brought from Aldi, years ago and they still work a treat and cover 10km in the countryside as they were out last week when the dogs escaped !! I just don't fancy having a 'headband' or 'neckband' if I can help it .. .. traumatised by visions of looking a bit Paula Abdul/Madonna esque Throat mics being a little more discreet, so going to give them a go first
Guest Guest
Throat mics work well also, just a bit more expensive
Rab (bombero) Reid
They are, but I'm buying a couple of cheapies from Fleabay to test their potential .. Will report on my findings

Rab (bombero) Reid
Well, received my throat mics but the 2-pin (2.5mm and 3.5mm) connector doesn't fit into my radios Pins are about a mm too close together! I can't find anywhere that quotes throat mics for the BT Freeway (probably not surprising really..), but may continue to look for a 2-pin connector with 10mm spacing and give them a go. Perserverance!!
Steven (WE51STE)
Rob To answer your question they are the (Licence Free) PMR 446MHz ( 8 channel + 16 Pre-Programmed ) radios but also work on LPD ( 69 Channel ) frequencies. Bombero The midlands also have the dual 2.5 and 3.5 mm connectors, although I'm not sure on their distance apart. Whether their the same as BT or would your mics would fit the midlands ? If they are no good for you and they would fit mine I might have a plan !! Where and how much were yours ?
