Hi all,

When inspecting a second-hand car how do you tell if the Westfield chassis has been powder coated or not?

Does it scrape off like paint and how much better is it than paint...

Cheers.

If it's matt black, and doesn't scrape off *easily*, it's powder coated. It's the nuts. I wouldn't touch a Westfield that had anything other than Westfield original, or CAT Motorsport powdercoating.......

westfield original! pah..if my roll bar is anything to go by, then i'm thankful i got mine done elsewhere!

My powder coating is gloss black. matt is just 'watered down' gloss apparently.

Powder coating will be a very even coat. no runs or sags, and definately no brushstrokes! - and thicker than your average paint job too.

Oh dear......My sprint car dates from 1989, and the powdercoating is (mostly) as good as it was when new........

Silver Star Coatings in Thetford did a fantastic job of the powdercoating on my car.

Chassis

All the ali panelling

All rear suspension

All front suspension.

All ancilary brackets.

Dash

Had it all done in "Ford Motor Company" satin black.

It looks luuuuverlllly.

The origional Westfield stuff circa 1988 was pretty flakey......

Chaz.

PS if you use Silver Star tell Peter I sent you.

I'm not sure, but the term epoxy coating is often used to describe powder coating.........

I think that the process is the same but the coating material is different.

I'm told that the powdercoating finish is less brittle and less fade resistant than the epoxy powdercoating so for the chassis and related stuff I chose straight powdercoating.

I really can't describe how good it looks

When I worked for DAX we used 2 powder coating processes. The cheap one was a stove enamel similar in finish to cellulose or smoothe hammerite. This was brittle and not particularly durable as it used to chip easily. The better finish is epoxy powder coating which comes in a satin or matt finish. It is more resistant to impacts buts needs a keyed degreased surface to adhere properly long term.

If you buy a bare chassis my reccommendation would be to get it degreased thoroughly then shot blasted. An epoxy powder coating would be the most durable when applied to this. If you are epoxy powder coating aluminium parts you will need to etch prime the surface first.

Hope this helps?

Windy - slightly off thread but what is your view of the Rush? A friend of mine is muttering about getting one and while there are various posts on Robin Hoods etc. I don't think that I have ever seen Dax mentioned here?

i'm getting one and i've mentioned it a few times but nothing but silence.  Cossy turbo for 12k or less did it for me  :D

Plus i live in essex so 17 inch chrome wheels will fit right in....

Heard bad reports about the powder coating from dax so still not sure what to do about it....

A well engineered car but a little heavy and a bit pricey. If you want a car to put a cossie turbo in then this will be the ideal choice.

Duncan Cowper is having some good results from his bike turbo car & his chassis is running the camber compensating front suspension.
