o/t LR discovery battle

..never ending battle that is.

Fed up with paving being dripped upon leaving a mess every where i go i thought i'd attack it... head-on.  ( 300tdi btw )

OK open bonnet up and find a big mess..

1st stage - adjust tappets and reseal rocker cover.. and clean the top..

no diesel leaks from the returns so at least that's a bonus..

still dripping after a few runs - the oil breather o-ring into the rocker cover is looking a bit tired - renew and reclean the top...

but still dripping again after a few runs..

so now to look again - vacuum pump rivets are loose, great.

whip it out drill out the rivets, sealant either side of the unobtainable fancy rubber o-ring which was weeping.. bolt it back up with 5mm bolts and nylocks instead of the poncy original rivets..

reclean the block ( again )

back together, start up just now... all looking good and much cleaner than before which makes me feel loads better!!

- me thinks "great what a good way to finish the year"

Until my mate points out that we still havent done the rear diff nose seal which is overdue ( we almost killed a big puller trying to get to the seal a few months back ) - will need big heat and a bigger puller when we have a spare morning at work...

..and then we spot the oil coolant pipe press fitting seems a bit loose.. might be or might not be weeping and dripping onto the front diff too...

will need to check that when the oil is hotter after a long run - at idle it is fine..  guess i know what my first week in 2012 will be doing :-D

Add to that some rear wings, rear floor - bit of metal work about the roof windows.. all to be done in spring..

But wierd as it sounds - the old girl isn't going to be scrapped just yet if i can help it!

in the three years or so it has had

both rear calipers & all brakes/discs

both diffs

a front half shaft

immobiliser problems

door lock springs

lots of fanbelt tensioner pulley bearings

rear disclocation cones and shock droppers added

steering guard / diff guards / meaty front bumper added

front inner wings redone

front shocks, steering damper

panhard bushes.

rear shock bushes..

additional rear row jump seats put it..

+ probably a whole lot more i've forgotten too

- and have three sets of rims / tyres for it too :-)

& a set of snow chains!

So while some laugh at my investment i have to smile - as none of the parts have cost much at all.

I can fill it with wood/rubbish/skis/kids and go anywhere.

We regularly take it to the ski slope where it can park in the worst part of the car park - ( but the best place to park for the ski lift and putting on boots/skis etc while sitting in the boot! )

Only problem i've found is camping with bikes.. coupled with kids the car is useless for this - i don't want to put them on the rear door - on the roof is a bit too high.. and didn't really want a trailer just for bikes..  - any thoughts?

Happy New Year folks!

Bike rack that goes on the tow bar

I get four bikes in mine thule make them

then you can't open the back door...  unless it is one that can tilt - but have you seen the weight of four bikes.. to tilt that and get something out the boot each time is quite a job.

leaving kids at home does sound very appealing :-)

Buy them a tandem apiece then you only need 2 bikes  :p

other job early next year.. quickly blank off the pto and top cover on a series 3 transfer box..  have removed a pto winch off a wreck - and have sold the wreck :-)  trouble is the buyer wants to drive the wreck home..

so i've got to whip out some bits off another series3 to use..

don't want it to remain standing too long in the workshops though so guess i'll be getting up to my elbows in it too :-)

Add to that a disco transfer box diff rebuild and two freelander ird rebuilds to be done.. not wanting to do the irds really - they are made of soft cheese and will come back and bite me I am sure...

all this to make space so i can drop in my zetec and give it to the exhaust man :-)  finally!!!!!!!

ps - have a tandem too - they are worse to get into cars..

we used to get one into my alfa 33 but that was with just two sitting in the front..

ps if you do offroad on a tandem then beware of drop offs..  still brings a tear to my eye when i was on the back..  i kinda sat on the crudguard and the tyre left its marks on my A*** ripping the lycra..  :-D whole club fell about laughing..   :-D

I give up chasing leaks on mine and just top it up instead. If only it'd leak onto the inner wings!!

i had a camper years ago and made a bike rack to fit - bought an old tow bar off any car - this enabled me to have the plate with holes that matched the bolt holes on your tow bar - turned over the tow bar i just bought then attached enough horizontal bars to slot in wheels of bikes - had 3 on it but you could weld it longer. if you dont need to make it quick release it works great - bolt on bolt off - worked for me was rock solid. it will need a pivoting upright to tie top tubes of bikes too and a light board [boards can be bought as youll probably know from camping type shops etc]

this isnt an option if you need to put it on and off everytime but for once in a while it works great and cos its bolted on you dont worry about security of the rack - just leave it on slap some hammerite on can send you drawings if your interested [not scale just to give you the idea]
