nearly done Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 The lap top is runnng slower than a snail,so I am guessing the registry could do with a clean up. Has any one used any of the free ones off the net? Recommendations of the good, the bad and the ugly greatly received. Cheers,Sean. Quote

tex Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 if you can get hold of a copy of revo uninstaller its pretty easy to use - will uninstall old programs your no longer using AND wipe up the old files it leaves behind as well as giving you tools to clean caches etc and junk files all come with it free of course get it here http://download.cnet.com/Revo-Un....mncol;1 top left of page where it says download now in green box - use blue link under the green box 'direct download link' good program iv used for years theres a video review on the page too Quote
Stuart Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Another vote for CCleaner here. Also TweakNow Reg Cleaner - finds stuff that CCleaner doesn't but doesn't have the other features of CCleaner. Notably the startup cleaning function (yes I know you can do it via msconfig but this is easier) and if you've got lots of stuff starting that you don't need then this could be part of your problem. Obviously the anti-virus and anything Microsoft, leave alone. But in my experience, anything with Real Player, printer stuff (HP are the biggest offenders), Adobe, Quick Time, Tom Tom, web cams, Shockwave et al can be turned off at start-up. Best to do it one at a time and restart afterwards if at all in doubt. Quote
Lurksalot Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 Cheers Cap'n , that makes good sense , I shall add that procedure to my 'must do soon' list Quote

Start/Run/services.msc is a good place to start for all the other stuff. Disable the obvious stuff like the Adobe & Google updaters then look somewhere like here to see what else you can disable or switch from automatic to manual. Then Start/Run/msconfig/services referencing this. Do be careful not to turn off anything vital though! Quote
