Mat Jackson Posted December 24, 2011 Posted December 24, 2011 Friend has a Focus tdi and is having these problems: Car loses power, usually when trying to pull away in 1st gear. When in neutral he put the accelerator to the floor and instead of the engine revving straight up it took a few seconds to get to 3000 revs. Any ideas? I don't know much about diesels, but my first thought was injectors as it sounds like a fueling issue. So what do the wise WSCC think? Quote
SteveD Posted December 24, 2011 Posted December 24, 2011 which engine and how old ,some had injector issues ,but could be turbo related ,all the pipes ok ,no splits etc Quote
Mat Jackson Posted December 24, 2011 Author Posted December 24, 2011 Not sue on engine size, or been able to see it yet, but have been told you can still here the turbo spool up.... Quote
Stuart Posted December 24, 2011 Posted December 24, 2011 Had something like this on a diesel A6 once - an air pipe had come off the turbo. Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted December 24, 2011 Posted December 24, 2011 My Mondeo lost power in a big way and it was a split turbo pipe between the turbo and the manifold. Easy fix... Quote
fatbaldbloke Posted December 24, 2011 Posted December 24, 2011 Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve on the TDCi gives that sort of symptom but would normally show on the yellow engine warning light. Quote
langy Posted December 24, 2011 Posted December 24, 2011 I had a tdci Focus a good few years ago and it lost all power at the same spot on my journey every day for about a week . Never did find out what was wrong with it , just as well it was a company car Quote
geothro Posted December 24, 2011 Posted December 24, 2011 I would check your rubber turbo hoses, i had one go on my 1.8 tdci just as it goes into inlet box on the engine. It made a noise like the fan was on full speed about 2ooo revs and up. At first i woundered what the hell was going on, because the windscreen fan was on about 3 speed. then as i said when i accelerated it sounded like the fan was on 6 speed. Its a common problem on the focus tdci turbo pipes. What year and engine do you have. Quote
RobK Posted December 26, 2011 Posted December 26, 2011 If its similar to the Connects there can be a problem with the accelerator pedal sensor. Can give an intermitant?(sp) problem or just fail completely. On the connects (fbw) you have to change the entire pedal assembly. Only a thought..... Quote
speedy jon Posted December 26, 2011 Posted December 26, 2011 If its a 2004 to 2010 shape focus 1.6 or 2lt I'm putting my money on it being the dpf blocked due to it not being able to do a regeneration. When the PCM sees this it usually brings on the mil light (engine) and goes into limp mode only allowing a max of 3k rpm. If it is this it can be very expensive to sort because a new dpf for ford is £800/ £900 I think and then the fuel additive is nearly £300. Ford knows they are common to block so now recommend replacement at 75k miles. If its just been serviced and it's a 2lt check the vac pipe near the oil filter they are easy to dislodge, this causes reduced power because the pipe controls the variable vain on the turbo. Quote
RedditchJay Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve on the TDCi gives that sort of symptom but would normally show on the yellow engine warning light. my older 2008 TDCI had a EGR value issue, but mine was the puma 1.9 engine.... took them 6 months to find the fault, then was never right after so p/x in for the VW Golf which i have at present....... Garry Bunn - Derby & Notts Joint AO Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 There are 3 common problems with the Focus tdi's (from my experience and spending a lot of time digging through the Focus forums) - Mass air sensor failure - Fracture of the steel pipe that runs between the turbo and the intercooler where the bracket bolts to the block (not easy to see) - EGR valve failure or needs cleaning, hard to get to.... It is probably worth getting it put on a fault code analyser, shop around for this though, can be expensive HTH Quote
Matt Seabrook Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Also I have had problems with Mondeo injectors needing recoding. It would seem the the ECU just seems to forget them after a while. Quote
jon e boy Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 you need to find out model and engine type really but most probably one of the following EGR valve not sealing in closed position or stuck open even though the turbo spins up doesnt mean you have boost could have sticking waste gate or binding variable vain depending on which type is fitted is a common problem MAP sensor or maf sensor problem Quote
