reynolds_ash Posted November 17, 2003 Posted November 17, 2003 I know, I know, you don't buy a Westfield for the fuel economy, however since I had my Westfield tuned (Twin Weber 40's) she drinks the fuel like mad. Has anyone had the same experience? Anything I can do? Also since she has been tuned she has been a mare to start (first thing only) - she usually takes 4 goes to start and when she has started she pops and bangs until she has warmed up. Has anyone got any helpful advice or tips, as i would like to improve the situation. Many thanks 1.6 CVH (1998) New Westfield Owner Ash Quote
bill shurvinton Posted November 17, 2003 Posted November 17, 2003 Hi Ash, I've seen this happen before. Basically your tuner will not have bothered with setting up the idle and progression. Shouldn't be too difficult to fix though. If you are anywhere near Reading I should be able to take a look at it. Otherwise I'll try and do a remote diagnosis. Bill Quote
Snowy Posted November 17, 2003 Posted November 17, 2003 Hi, what is your starting method. Mine will only start with no choke, (Why is it fitted???) and two squirts of jungle-juice. Then jab the throttle if it sound like it will die. After a minute is settles down. My neighnours love this ritual at 6am, (V8) What MPG were you getting pre-tune, and what is it now?? Is it faster, more responsive post tuning?? Cheers Quote
Noel Johnson Posted November 18, 2003 Posted November 18, 2003 Hi there reynolds_ash, I too have the CVH on twin 40's and it gets about 22 mpg on a good run, this ironically got better after the rolling road session in Tamworth a couple of years ago - probably time for another one methinks. Did you have the westy tuned for max power or conservative running As for the starting I generally have to pump the throttle 4 times prior to turning the key from cold and pray like mad that it'll start when it's warm (see my warm start problems in the techy board for a better explanaition) From cold the engine will splutter and protest for the first couple of minutes but settle itself down - this got better after I changed the plugs, leads and oil as mine is a 97 model as I don't think it had been done before, but it still needs to be kept alive before it will tick over on it's own. Hope this helps or indeed makes sense, Noel Quote
nlash Posted November 19, 2003 Posted November 19, 2003 I know this is a CVH related thread, but my X-flow has recently suffered with poor starting, particularly from cold. Changed dizzy cap (after modifying with a round file ), rotor arm, leads and plugs... bingo, no such problems now! Might be worth you just changing these parts for new in the first instance before you head for the rolling road Good luck Nige Quote
sedsy Posted November 19, 2003 Posted November 19, 2003 I have a CVH on 40`s (Yippee a cvh thread cmon Mark Hurry) And when i had first started running the car it was great when flooring it but a bit lumpy in traffic etc. Ivan at Procomp has tweaked the carbs for me and its so much better, it does start to pop again after a few months but runs really well. To start its just 4-6 pumps of the fun pedal then it always fires first time and after a couple of mins held at about 1150rpm its fine to pull away. Not sure about economy i always use shell optimax unleaded (add cvl and it flies) put £10 in and i think i do about 100miles !?? Starting when hot isnt too bad at all either! i think you just get used to what it likes. Been out tonight no sidescreens or hood and a shaved head testing out these new Toyo Proxies wow they really grip well. Gripes on car are:- gearbox (type 9) bangs on chassis under some circumstanced which is annoying. May change engine mounts to a stiffer type !?? Experience and suggestions welcome. Also alternator (near new) Red light flickering on dash found wires come adrift inside alternator. resoldered them and ok for a few weeks but started again tonight :-( is there a more robust one out there?? By the way Ash are you far from Bham? Quote
