Dracoro Posted November 10, 2003 Posted November 10, 2003 ?? Looking for a 2.0 Westfield. How heavy is one typically and what can be done to reduce weight? I will want to keep a normal windscreen however! How much do the bits you can take off weigh? (e.g heater components etc.) Quote
S8ight Posted November 10, 2003 Posted November 10, 2003 ......what can be done to reduce weight? join a gym and go on a diet Quote
Blatman Posted November 10, 2003 Posted November 10, 2003 Kinda need to know what the reasoning is. It's not as simple a question as you might think. Besides, it's not like any of them are especially overweight to start with...... Quote
JonnyBoy Posted November 11, 2003 Posted November 11, 2003 it all depends how far you want to go... people have been known to gun drill their half shafts! Quote
oioi Posted November 11, 2003 Posted November 11, 2003 a 2.0l westfield will normally be in the region of 550 - 650kg. If is outside of this norm then somebody has spent money either putting weight in (stereos - euuuch! or taking weight out. to save weight the cheap way pull out stuff that you dont think is neccesary - carpets, windscreen, boot box, heater, weather protection, passenger. after that it starts to get more exspensive - lightweight battery, brakes, wheels, carbon fibre bits, spendy instruments, new seats etc. rember for virtually everything westfield make/sell there is somebody else making/selling a lighter equivalent (at a cost). some engines are lighter than others as well. oioi Posted November 11, 2003 Posted November 11, 2003 oh yeah, you did say how much does each component way the numbers below are robbed from a website and nowt to do with me and are also from a cateringvan, but may give you an idea or two. felters Posted November 11, 2003 Posted November 11, 2003 Quite interesting reading. Unless you start with a K series you'd have to spend a small fortune trying to get the weight down to even be level pegging... Quote
JohnCh Posted November 11, 2003 Posted November 11, 2003 I have some Westfield-specific weights listed on my website. -John Quote
timd Posted November 11, 2003 Posted November 11, 2003 How much do the bits you can take off weigh? (e.g heater components etc.) Westfield supplied heater I took off my car weighed 4.1kg (dry), heater duct moulding thing was 0.4kg.. Quote
Enterpryse Posted November 11, 2003 Posted November 11, 2003 Ahhh, but what about the saving in the water the rad contained and the 4 bolts/nuts and washers holing it in?. The lists are VV interesting actually and show where the big savings can be made. I have to ask tho do the small savings, 100g here and there really matter in a road car? I'll do some calcs later and see whether the cost in saving 10-15Kgs in weight would outweigh cost of upping the engine a few BHP to get the same power to weight..... unless someone has already done it? Stuart Quote
timd Posted November 11, 2003 Posted November 11, 2003 but what about the saving in the water the rad contained That's why I quoted weight as dry... Don't forget to offset the weight of the bolts with the weight of the GRP that you drill out of the scuttle... Quote
Enterpryse Posted November 11, 2003 Posted November 11, 2003 DRY AHHHHHH I thought you meant you weren't drunk when you weighed it Does the SG of the battery count Quote

In theory at least, the Westy with the weight loss will have the biggest advantage, as not only do you gain acceleration, but also gain braking and cornering power too. I know, it is a bit more complicated than that, but you get the idea. Quote
Enterpryse Posted November 12, 2003 Posted November 12, 2003 Yep, all true I'm surprised some others' didn't bite at the challenge. I'll have to loose a few pounds in weight coz I like to be moderately warm so theres no way I'm losing the heater. LOL Stuart Quote
