Zetec 1800 vs 2000

Hello All,

I am considering the engine choice for the Westfield I have a bog standard 2.0 silver top that has done 78000 miles. For this install I will need to source induction system (i.e. throttle bodies, manifold etc) clutch kit, release bearing etc namely spend quite a bit of dosh and time in installing it in the car.

I am also looking at (timmeh's engine)a 1800 silver top Zetec with 2.0 litre cams and all the gubbins to drop straight into the car including exhaust.

I think the 1800 will give me better acceleration, than a high top end - I like that; where as the 2.0 litre will give me better top end performance.

My dilemma is the overall power out put difference from the two engines and driveability, and may be future upgrades. Do I stick with the 2.0 litre engine and go down this route, or drop in the 1800 and keep the 2.0 litre for when more funds are available and then drop in the 2.0 litre.

The car will be mainly for track days and little road use, over to you.

I don't know a lot about Zetec engines, but go for the one with the larger bore.

1.8 has less power than the 2.0 even with the 2.0 cam I would have thought...

PLUS... you will always want more power once you have got used to it...esp on track days...

my advise would be to stick with the 2.0l and upgrade that when you need to...

the 2l standard with the same bolt ons as mine will prob only give you approx 5-8hp more than mine. depends on how much more power your going to want later on..

theyres a few boys here getting 175-180hp from the 1800 engine... to get this you would need head work doing and wilder cams.. if youre looking to go 200hp+ then youll probably want the 2l engine, and youll need a lot of money!!!

If youre looking for an approx 150-155hp now, and a fairly cheap conversion to 175-180 then personally I think mines a good buy.

feel free to say if anyone thinks otherwise, but im pretty certain its a sensible buy...

dont forget, by the time youve bought your carbs/tbs,box/exhaust etc youll have spent as much if not more than my setup already!

this is true enough....

lets not forget that your 2l has done 78000 miles aswell!!! not exactly a spring chicken-

I did this a few years ago, coverted a CVH to a 2.0 Zetec and it cost a fortune compared to a 1.8 conversion due to the change of many components such as alternator to 1.8, using a 1.8 clutch etc etc.

Stick with the 1.8 as it is an easy job and will give you around the 150BHP ish which in reality is about enough for a road car.

The money you will save spend on setting the suspension up properly and you will have a better car for your money that you can actually get the best out of.

Better to have a good handling car than one which is quick but doesn't handle very well, especially if your driving style is average.

If the 1.8 engine represents good value considering all the kit that's on it, buy it and run it around until you feel the need to upgrade. When and if that time comes, all the bits will bolt on to the 2.0 anyway, and you can sell the 1.8 bare engine.

If you're going to later spend out on hot cams, porting and other tuning work you will get much more return for your money from the 2 litre engine, even if you need to add a few items to "refresh" it due to the highish mileage, IMHO, hence my recommendation to keep it.

If this is a new build, also consider that the age of the engine might be important for emissions.

Oh, and, as said, acceleration and top speed will be better across the board with the 2.0 engine.

I have had all the incarnations of the Zetec Engine in my car - I started with the 150 bhp 1.8, then had headwork done and had 179bhp 1.8 Zetec then converted to a 2.0ltr Zetec with a silly amount of Horse power.

The 1.8 179 bhp Zetec was the 'nicest' and most suitable for the Car IMO - the 2.0ltr is very quick but you can feel that the engine becomes the dominant part of the car - something I don't like - a car should balance all its compenent and the sum of those parts should be greater than any indidual component.

The 1.8 Zetec will have 40mm Jenveys which aren't ideal to put on a 2.0ltr - the 2.0ltr likes 45mm and will also need higher flowing injectors than the 1.8 which, if they are the ones sold by Westfield as the winter madness upgrade will be right on the limit at 155bhp.

The 2.0ltr gives quite a bit more torque and slightly more power so will be quicker, especially in the midrange 4,500rpm area but the 1.8 is nicer to rev.

1.8 ZETEC approx 150 BHP - 160 BHP with cams and TB's

2.0 ZETEC approx 165 BHP - 175BHP with cams and TB'S

15 horses wont make any difference for standard road use......

go with whatever you feel will be a better install, if doing it yourself what would be easier ???

think the difference wil be less than 15hp- as we have to compare a 1800 with 2l cams on tbs

with a 2l with std same cams on tbs... guessing id say 5-8 hp difference, and lets not forget his 2l engine has done 78k (I believe) compared to 15k, chances are the engine will have lost a bit too.....

ST170... better starting point.. same as Blacktop for fitting...  bigger valves.. better pistons, stronger rods etc

@180+hp with standard engine with decent exhaust, TB's and ECU

And they are cheapish on Ebay..
