samcooke Posted November 4, 2002 Posted November 4, 2002 Looked slow to me. I was watching their numbers on the display and it took 11 (count em) seconds to hit 100 mph from the start. Thought it was supposed to be nearer 8. Quote
ChrisG Posted November 4, 2002 Posted November 4, 2002 I imagine it would take a lot of practice (and probably a few clutches in the process) to find a launch sequence to get it absolutely right, so seeing as he had never driven the thing before I suppose 0-100 in about 11 seconds isnt too bad really. deadscoob Posted November 4, 2002 Posted November 4, 2002 Would agree with that - in my Scoob - 1st ever 0-100 I did was 11.5 secs - not bad - a few later it was down to 9.5. Although there is no way their demo car will do 0-100 in 8 secs with the gearing it's got at mo. Quote
JonnyBoy Posted November 4, 2002 Posted November 4, 2002 There was an article in the Sat telegraph motoring section a while back. A XTR2 vs Radical SR3 and a more traditionally styled Crossle zetec powered car. The Radical had a bored out busa lump (1.5 250bhp) if i remember correctly, and kicked the ass of the XTR2! Granted it was close on 35grand and no chance of sva, but still a contender for a competition! telegraph article...need to subscribe though Radical: Estimated performance: top speed 160mph, 0-60mph in 3.9sec. Best lap time at Anglesey 46.2sec/82.36mph http://motoring.telegraph.co.uk/motorin....G] XTR: Estimated performance: top speed 150mph, 0-60mph in 4.2sec. Best lap time at Anglesey (1.057 miles) 48.2sec/78.95mph. Crossle: Estimated performance: top speed 160mph, 0-60mph in 4sec. Best lap time at Anglesey 48.5sec/78.46mph. Quote
deadscoob Posted November 4, 2002 Posted November 4, 2002 Think that spec Radical is closer to 50k.... It had the engine upgrade, shocks, centre lock wheels, air jacks - basically every option - add it together and it's nigh on 50k..... Quote
Midds Posted November 4, 2002 Posted November 4, 2002 What about an Ultima (I know we're talking way outside XTR2 money) but with 600+ bhp of americas finest up the rear, it is supposed to be Macca speed and more if you tweak it. Talking of the MKE GT1, Martin Keenan has been quoted as saying that the handling is now sorted and when tesing in somewhere (Spain?), with a Fireblade lump in it, was keeping pace with the XTR2. Apparently when it was first outed, they hadn't set the shocks at all, just taken a setting they used for a 7 replica meaning every time they took a bootful of greenstuff the front spoiler would ground on the floor. Then they fixed the underfloor aerodynamics which gave stability, changed the suspension to give the car balance in the corners and put different wheels and tyres on it to give the grip and progression they were looking for. He thinks it is now handling better than an XTR2 (but he would say that) Can't deny that 11995 for a turn-key blade engined car or 4500 for the kit including the drive-train makes some of the competition look decidely pricey. Not sure it's as good looking as the XTR2 though. He did say one interestting thing though, that the XTR2 kept failing on the track when being pushed and that the drive-train and mountings he has developed overcome this. Midds Quote
peterg Posted November 4, 2002 Posted November 4, 2002 All this talk of 600+bhp Ultimas seems to miss the fact that if a hugely powerful engine was the answer to this challenge then why was the Zonda beaten by the XTR2? My vote (though I love the look and sound of an Ultima Can Am and would like to own one given £70,000 going spare) would be for a Radical SR3 and yes, they are road legal - even with a similar spec engine to the XTR2 - just because they've been going much longer with this sort of car and therefore it is likely to be much more 'sorted' but let's just hope we get a chance to see it for real!! PS: CCC Track Day of the Year test found a Kawasaki 1100 engined Radical (185bhp quoted) just faster than a Suzuki 1300 engined XTR2 (no output given?) Quote
Midds Posted November 4, 2002 Posted November 4, 2002 The point about the Ultima is that it is so sorted on the track that McLaren used them as test beds and with 600+ bhp would have a much higher PWR than either a Zonda or XTR2 and therefore probably beat them both. However, I agree on the Radical front, the 252bhp version on slicks is on a par with this years F3 cars and that is going some Weight 990kgs Power 635bhp Ultima = 640bhp/tonne XTR2 = 460bhp/tonne Zonda = 440bhp/tonne Radical = 540bhp/tonne Handling will make a huge difference but raw power counts for loads (especially now they have lengthened the Ultima and changed the suspension geometry)! midds Quote
Al Yupright Posted November 4, 2002 Posted November 4, 2002 My vote (though I love the look and sound of an Ultima Can Am and would like to own one given £70,000 going spare) would be for a Radical SR3 and yes, they are road legal - even with a similar spec engine to the XTR2 - just I doubt the Radical will make an appearance on Top Gear, because to Joe Public it looks identical to an XTR2 or vice-versa. I think Top Gear will want to have something of a different style/flavour each week. Spect there'll be a high-boost scooby or evo on there soon. Shame it has to be road legal, I'd like to see the PCD Saxon that was in CCC (208kg single seater), or the carbon tubbed twin engine Force Single Seater that was at last years Autosport show. Or the Renault Espace F1 Quote
samcooke Posted November 4, 2002 Posted November 4, 2002 If they didn't limit it to road cars it would get silly, howsabout a Porker 917? I think Al's right. You'll see a variety of contenders rather than actually trying to find the outright fastest cos the audience (me included) would soon get bored of BECs knocking various tenths off eachother. The ultima would defo be worth a look though. It's hardly a scientific experiment after all, just a gangly fella with a perm mucking about. *jealous* Did you know next week's celebrity guest is Rowan Atkinson, and he's bringing his Macca F1? Probably. Quote
Mark Stanton Posted November 4, 2002 Posted November 4, 2002 Macca F1? Probably the bestest ever car IMHO Yep this is gonna sound bad - but even better than any Westfield Gets coat Quote
ricdiggle Posted November 4, 2002 Posted November 4, 2002 Well, I'd like to see the Ultima too. I live very near to the Ultima factory and have twice been passed by one whilst out on a blat. Both times I was passed, I was seriously giving it some in the blade and was passed like I wasn't even moving. They are awesome in every way. Macca F1 for very little money (realtively! ) Quote
scott beeland Posted November 4, 2002 Posted November 4, 2002 Anyone got a tape of the top gear xtr2 stuff I can borrow. I was busy moppin' up stuff even I never knew existed in a human body while it was on. (at work; not home you understand!! ). Thanx. I love my job!! Quote
