chrisj02 Posted November 7, 2003 Posted November 7, 2003 Any body know of any ways to change the Valve stem seals on an x-flow without removing the head? Quote
Enterpryse Posted November 7, 2003 Posted November 7, 2003 Nope - although I would like to be amazed if there is a gizmo to help do this. Stuart Quote
Nick A Posted November 7, 2003 Posted November 7, 2003 heard various ways of doing this putting cord into cylinder through plug hole with piston at BDC turn to TDC to hold valves shut or compressed air in cyclider but never tried any of these ways ? have done valve seals on other fords without removing heads CVH and pinto, have fitted valve seals on OHV Datsuns many years ago without removing cylinder head by puttinmg piston at TDC and using special tool to compress valve spring don't know if you can do this on OHV ford ? Think the tool was made by Franklin ? don't know if still availiable ? Hope this helps Quote
tonym Posted November 7, 2003 Posted November 7, 2003 Remove all the plugs. Feed a piece of cord or rope down the plug hole (leave the end out) and turn over engine until it becomes tight. This will prevent the valve dropping. Remove collets, replace seals re-assemble and remove rope. Repeat for other cylinders. Hey presto! Quote
Enterpryse Posted November 7, 2003 Posted November 7, 2003 I'm dead interested in how.......... go on... Quote
Nick A Posted November 8, 2003 Posted November 8, 2003 Hi Enterpryse noticed on another post you have a pinto ? Ford did have a special tool especially for doing this job on a pinto engine, I know yours is out of the car but thought you may be interested. Nick Quote
Enterpryse Posted November 8, 2003 Posted November 8, 2003 Yeah, thanks. I followed one of the links above and found it. At about £40 its probably worth it if the job needed doing saves money on the gaskets and head bolts Engine is together now and potted into the chassis earlier today Stuart Quote
Nick A Posted November 8, 2003 Posted November 8, 2003 No thats not the Ford tool Enterpryse but would do the job ok. Ford tool just compresses spring by levering against camshaft, all you do is make sure piston is at tdc on cylinder your working on valves only drop small amount on a pinto Quote
