Danny Posted November 3, 2003 Posted November 3, 2003 Hiya to everyone! Just got my first westy! I wanna change the dash to a milled stainless one! Also take the oppertunity to shave off an inch for a bit more knee room! Can anyone forsee any problems? Thanks Quote
Blatman Posted November 3, 2003 Posted November 3, 2003 Depends....... If it's going to be kept shiny, you'll be blinded by the sunlight at some point. Also, stainless much harder to drill/shape/generally work with that the more traditional aluminium. So, why stainless? Why not ali or carbon fibre? Quote
CharliePsycho Posted November 3, 2003 Posted November 3, 2003 Also remember there is a steel tube that runs the width of the car just behind the bottom edge of the car... Get a removeable steering wheel, much easier!! ...© Quote
felters Posted November 4, 2003 Posted November 4, 2003 Just put a Racetech 240mm flat bottom wheel with a quick release boss in mine. Makes a massive difference in terms of getting in and a lot more space when I'm eventually jammed in there. Also changing the dash but that is a cosmetic/weight thing as I have a leather covered plank at the moment - nice! Fluke do a c/fibre blank for about £50. Quote
Chopkins Posted November 5, 2003 Posted November 5, 2003 I'm just developing the spec for a Westie that I will start building early next year. I had thought of a carbon dash but thought that this not be allowed under SVA. Can anyone tell me if a carbon dash is allowable under SVA? Quote
timd Posted November 6, 2003 Posted November 6, 2003 I'm just developing the spec for a Westie that I will start building early next year. I had thought of a carbon dash but thought that this not be allowed under SVA. Can anyone tell me if a carbon dash is allowable under SVA? Don't see why not. As far as I'm aware the only requirement for SVA is the rolled edge on the bottom, provided your chosen supplier of carbon dash ahs this - you should be ok. Quote
mb893 Posted November 6, 2003 Posted November 6, 2003 Think this has something to do with the instrument bezels having 'sharp' edges? The clock that are out side the steering wheel exclusion zone are the ones affected. The Standard factory ones have padding that the clocks sink into, so getting around this problem. If I'm wrong - great, as this means I can put the CF dash on now, not the old factory one I've been saving Regards John Quote
Mark Stanton Posted November 6, 2003 Posted November 6, 2003 Sorry John you're correct Hang onto that old padded dash for a while longer Quote
timd Posted November 6, 2003 Posted November 6, 2003 Ah, oops! Forgot about that... Err, I mean, err, weren't you fitting a stack dash in the exempt zone behind the steering wheel, and no other guages?? Then it'd be ok!! Quote
Al Yupright Posted November 6, 2003 Posted November 6, 2003 Mine got thru SVA just dandy with a powdercoated black ali dash. Stack dash, central mounted. Other than the radiusing of switches, no real reason why not to. Quote
hilux Posted November 6, 2003 Posted November 6, 2003 the only requirement for SVA is the rolled edge on the bottom Ahem A large number of cars have single skin plastic or carbon etc dashes fitted after SVA ie: no return at the bottom. In a crash this `should` shear your knee caps IMO which is why Olli is driving my old one with my home made dash with a rolled edge. Quote
Ric Posted November 6, 2003 Posted November 6, 2003 Mine went through SVA a few years ago with a C/F dash with no comments (did have an underside return lip) Ric Quote
Guest Posted November 7, 2003 Posted November 7, 2003 Hi all. Planning to start building early next year. Carbon dash from fluke looks great (£75 bargain). Does anyone know if it's suitable for a wide bodied westy. Fluke measurement is 1500mm in width. thanks. scott Quote
