jdinhants Posted November 5, 2003 Posted November 5, 2003 Just been offered 1.8 V6 from a Mazda MX3 write off. Probably around 40K miles. Anybody used this engine or is this a non starter Have done a search and will wait for Blatman or Mr Stanton to assist J D Quote
stu999 Posted November 5, 2003 Posted November 5, 2003 IMO a non-starter, if only because of complexity of installation. You will be 'on your own' sourcing induction/exhaust systems, and probably gearboxes/bell housings too. I dont think the engine makes a *huge* amount of power either. Also, I have heard from a couple of sources that the 1.8 V6's are prone to self destructing, if the engine gets a thrash after it has been 'pootling' for a while. Apparently it is because the valve to piston clearences are extremely tight, and the build up of carbon on both can cause them to meet if it isnt thrashed on a regular basis-with messy consquences... S8ight Posted November 5, 2003 Posted November 5, 2003 if it isnt thrashed on a regular basis-with messy consquences... so that means a reasonably revvy and tourquey V6 that you'd have to thrash all the time Quote
jdinhants Posted November 5, 2003 Author Posted November 5, 2003 so that means a reasonably revvy and tourquey V6 that you'd have to thrash all the time Wonder which car we could fit that into Was offered gearbox and everything else off the car! Quote
Glen_I Posted November 5, 2003 Posted November 5, 2003 A mate of mine bought one of these about 4 years ago and he still has it, its been reliable, but performance is naff i think.. 136ish BHP i think. (that reminds me, i am meant to be doing cam belt on it.. nice.........) It would cost alot to convert in to Westy i would of thought but nothings impossible?? Quote
stu999 Posted November 6, 2003 Posted November 6, 2003 IIRC the 1.8 V6 comes out of the MX3, which is FWD. Did Mazda fit it to a RWD? Quote
jdinhants Posted November 6, 2003 Author Posted November 6, 2003 Sounds too complicated to fit in a Westy. Will stick to Ford or VX ( or Toyota ) J D Quote
Mark Stanton Posted November 6, 2003 Posted November 6, 2003 Sounds too complicated to fit in a Westy Yep - as noted before you'd be on your own in sourcing parts and haveing one-off bits made Quote
S8ight Posted November 6, 2003 Posted November 6, 2003 Sounds too complicated to fit in a Westy. come on anything is possible Quote
Martin Keene Posted November 7, 2003 Posted November 7, 2003 come on anything is possible i hope he never crashes it... rover spent years trying to put the k series into mini, but every time they crash tested them the engine ended up in the cockpit... (well almost ) Quote
