House update and electrical question

Paul, Sorry for delay, my battle with the Audi got in the way - I lost!

Your diagram assumes I have a light already wired - I don't this is all totally new. I tried to follow your instructions but it didn't work. I then spent an hour with a meter and worked out the following.

Live to 1

Neutral to A1

A2 to term 1 on on/off switch

live from 1 to L on switch

A1 neutral to bulb

2 to other side of bulb

4 on the vtr4 is not used.

If you now switch the switch on the bulb will light for the time set on the relay.

I know this can't be the correct wiring because to switch it back on you have to switch the switch off then back on again.

But I'm bored now so that's the way it's going to be wired. It means running 4 wires from the consumer unit down the side of the house, 2 to the switch and 2 to the light (they will be fairly near each other. I'll also run 2 wires to another lamp at the back of the house. The idea is that when we get home we can switch the light on for, say, 3 minutes, which gives us enough time to get the front door open. When we have guests we can switch the light on so the light at the back of the house will allow them to find their care and p1ss off.

I'm sure you'll understand that on a cloudy night after 10pm (when the village lights go out) it's as black as a witches t*t here.

You can buy three core mains cable  - if that helps ( not sure I'm out with my iPhone ATM) .  The way the switch worked out isn't too bad - you might be able to buy momentary action switches which would sort it .

Good luck with  it anyway !!!

Just googled - momentary light switches are about for around £5

Not allowed to use 3 core in France, it's got to be solid copper. 2.5 for mains and 1.5 for lighting.

It doesn't work on the momentary switch. Well it does if I hold it on.

None of it is a problem, just got to pull 1 blue, 2 red (or brown) and 1 purple through the flexi conduit they use here and jobs a good 'un. I've got more wire and switches than B&Q at the moment.

ok -didn't mean flex you can get 3 core solid 1.5mm & earth  - used for 2 way circuits,  different rules in France !
