House update and electrical question

We are back in the house and it's lovely being warm and cosy. Lots of cosmetic jobs to do over the winter (such as painting and treating floors).

The bad news (for me that is) is that I've torn my back muscles again. I did it about 6 weeks ago and have been pressing on with morphine and codeine (about 50% more than the suggested maximum) in order to complete the building work. I am know having physio twice a week and slowly reducing the pain killers. Also not doing any lifting, just pottering about doing small light work.

However I do have a slight query. I do not want motion sensors on the proposed outside lights. I want to manually switch the lights on and have them stay on for a prescribed length of time.  I have been sold an AEG VTR4 unit which is supposed to do this. The wiring diagram on the unit shows it wired with a dimmer unit. I have wired it as per the diagram but ignoring the dimmer and it doesn't work as it's supposed to.

So, does anyone know a wiring diagram for this unit (it has an A1 and A2, 1 2 and 4 terminals) or does anyone know of a unit that can be energised and stay on for a prescribed period.

I will be taking photos soon and will put the before and after on the web site.

Cheers,

Sorry you've hurt your back again though  ;)

Pete, she's getting better but it'll be months, if ever before she gets back to HER normal. She can almost walk normally but cannot stand in one position (she rocks like a weeble man) and she cannot bend down.

But she can talk!!!!!!

Just found this..... looks a tad confusing but it might help soemone assist:

VTR4 near end "stair case switches"

I recon...  Permanent Live supply to A2 and 1.

Neutral to A1

From the old switch position:

take wire from the switched side of lamp  ( .i.e. side of the existing switch that goes to the lamp itself) and wire to 2

From the now empty hole in your switch wire to terminal 4

The other side of the existing light switch is the live feed and this can be looped across to A2 and 1. you now only need to find a neutral -from this circuit- to wire to terminal A1.( probably the hard bit!! -but by a bit of lateral thinking you might be able to mount  the VTR4 near the light fitting itself, there's a neutral there , actually the best option if its a loop in system !! !)

No responsibilty given or implied from this interpretation , make sure you agree first!!! or seek other help

BTW the I guess the dimmer is to give you warning, if it was used on the stairs, that thel ight is about to go out!!

Hammy, that diagram was the one I was using. However your suggestion is different to my interpretation. The unit fits in the consumer unit and will be fed by a 10 amp trip. The wires are already run down the outside wall to the lamp and switch. The switch is a momentary unit, is that what you expect?

Many thanks, if it works there's a beer or 6 coming your way.

We'll be in the UK from 17th to 27th December, if anyone wants to meet up for a beer. My "local" is Gardeners Rest in Neepsend (Sheffield) or Ladybower Inn at, er, Ladybower (on S.yorks/Derbyshire border)

Sorry Clive, I was a bit busy trying to beat the weather. As it happened the weather hasn't been a problem. Yesterday I was outside in a tee-shirt and it was warm!

Anyway, she's on the mend and I've got back muscles to repair and then we'll be back to normal.

Oh, apart from finding 2 brains.

They do a reasonable pub lunch in the Ladybower Inn, was in there a couple of months ago. Just an observation.

Bob, the landlady is a cordon-bleu cook and her meals are excellent. I used to live "round the corner" in Bradfield.

I'm having a meal in there with friends and family just before Christmas to celebrate becoming an old codger officially.I'll be so much richer with my pension going into the bank. Ooops. just remembered it's a UK pension so may just buy me a pint or two a week.

Norman ,

Enjoy your meal, hope all your issues are well in hand and her maj is on the mend.
