brenin Posted November 3, 2003 Posted November 3, 2003 Searching for a Scottish-based Westy for a while. Have come across a 96 se. Taken out for a spin and all seems to hang together - but I have a couple of questions: 1) it's got a cross flow engine. I get the feeling from these pages that crossflow = not good? Am I right - the spec of the car is as follows - its on a non-q plate; Westfield SE with 1700cc Kent Crossflow engine Powdercoated competition spaceframe SE chassis with aluminium bracing GRP gel coat body in bright red 711m Kent 1700cc 'rallytune' engine (runs about 136-140BHP but could go up to 160-180 with new cam and carb tune) Westfield shallow baffled sump High pressure oil pump Heavy duty vandelvell bearings Balanced and tuftrided crankshaft High compression pistons Unleaded big valve head Kent fast road camshaft Twin 40 Dellorto carburettors with 40mm chokes AP competition clutch Lightened steel flywheel Janspeed high flow manifold Type 9 competition ally bellhousing Rallytune 5 speed close ratio gearbox Live rear axle with Westfield panhard rod 4 link system and 3.54 differential M16 calipers with fast road compound pads Goodridge braided brake hoses Fully adjustable Spax coil over race suspension Westfield rose jointed quick rack with snap-off Momo competition steering wheel Professionally trimmed Westfield race seats with 4 point Willans harnesses Matching trim to side sections Fully carpeted 15" 5-spoke TSW alloy wheels with Yokohama A520 tyres Aluminim fuel cell Westfield competition radiator with Kenlowe fan CE approved anti-roll bar Westfield all-weather gear including doors and hood 2) Am I going to get problems with updating elements on a narrowbody as opposed to a widebody? The dash needs replacing for a start - do Westfield still supply to the narrower spec? 3) The build file is not with the car - seems to have passed through a regular dealer at some point and it is lost I'm concerned as I don't have any idea of how the engine has been set-up - Am I worrying unnecesarily? Comments from you guys who've done it before would be really welcome. Thanks IaN Quote
minghis Posted November 3, 2003 Posted November 3, 2003 Is this the first one you've driven and how much do they want for it? Quote
felters Posted November 3, 2003 Posted November 3, 2003 Also got a narrow car... not a big problem really. There are plenty around and lots of the specialists do stuff for them even if the factory doesn't. Fluke do so great carbon fibre dash blanks that you just cut to size. FWIW I also happen to think that the narrow cars look better! Quote
studbuckle Posted November 3, 2003 Posted November 3, 2003 That sounds like a good spec on paper for a x-flow but as you have no way of proving this I would hope the price reflects this. The x-flow is a crakcing engine for the SE and has the bonus of being really easy to work on. Kind of depends on how much they're asking before can comment further. Quote
brenin Posted November 3, 2003 Author Posted November 3, 2003 It's not the first I've driven - driven a few - this one certainly had a good push in the back! The guy is looking for 7K - good? IaN Quote
MARSDALEBEAR Posted November 3, 2003 Posted November 3, 2003 1) it's got a cross flow engine. I get the feeling from these pages that crossflow = not good? Quote
wrightster Posted November 3, 2003 Posted November 3, 2003 The guy is looking for 7K - good? IMO this is a bit expensive Quote
brenin Posted November 3, 2003 Author Posted November 3, 2003 Are we talking thousands out or hundreds. I was thinkning around 6-6,500? IaN Quote
minghis Posted November 3, 2003 Posted November 3, 2003 The guy is looking for 7K - good? I'd say it was top money for the car and my 'gut feeling' would be closer to £6k. If you're intending to keep it for a while all well and good, but if you want (or have) to sell it on after a short while bear in mind that wide bodied 'more modern engined' (and perhaps more user friendly) examples are hovering aroung the £7k ish range. Having recently sold an SE it is worrying how many prospective purchasers were put off by the lack of room in it, it could, IMHO, affect it's value in the future. Quote
oioi Posted November 3, 2003 Posted November 3, 2003 7k is well over the odds. (imho) studbuckle sold his nicely sorted x-flow for considerabl less than that (about 2k less istr) i paid 7kfor a reasonable (not immaculate) dry sumped 215bhp Vx powered car. a cross flow is a good engine, but not at that price. (sorry ) OiOi Quote
brenin Posted November 3, 2003 Author Posted November 3, 2003 Thanks for the responses everyone. I guess this isn't the car for me. I've got a 7K budget and want to get the most for my money - you thought it would have been easy! But geography (being in Scotland) conspires against me!! Oh well I'll keep looking. Can anyone recommend good cars around this price in the north of England? IaN Quote
