Try running a newer 4wd version ouch!!!! just cost me £400 for 2 new front top suspension mounts plus 6 hours labour @125 +vat if done by mainsteeler.

A friend of mine has done 10.5k in 2 months on his which is the same as mine thankfully it was all under warranty.

much newer Porsche 911 with less issues but also less character.......

There are many reasons for liking old cars, Porsches inparticular.

I adore 944/968s :)

But it's this whole 'character' thing I don't get.

Is character a set of engineering foibles so to speak?

And if so, why would yo want a car with 'faults'?

Surely you buy a car like a 964 because of the look/noise/performance/handling/badge and not because of design shortcommings?

Personally, I think 'character' is a bit of a Clarksonism

its kinda because its an iconic shape...... one of those early 90's supercars that never really looses its appeal.....

This particular 911 drives and handles so well, I would say handles better than most modern cars which cost double.....

like all 1990's cars its a bit basic inside but thats the appeal..... less is more.......

ooooooooooooo and is increasing in value.... unlike some newer cars that loose a few grand each year............. fully comp insurance for £255 cant go wrong really

Nicely timed bit of boardroom stuff for me...Westy left home with it's new owner yesterday, so now have cash in hand for next adventure.... I was planning on a Merc SL, but am now gravitating towards a 911 instead - having said that I've had a look at a  few and there is some serious garbage out there, so will need to tread carefully I suspect......

Character's fun, character puts the smile on your face and occasionally just makes you out and put giggle when your driving the car. Yes sometimes it is a collection of, strictly speaking, minor faults, but it doesn't have to be. More often it's just because of the character, that you excuse the minor faults!

If it was easy to define, it would be easy to engineer in. But it's not necessarily about being the fastest car, or the best handling, it's not going to score you points in a competition, in fact it might even make you last. But it is the set of car keys you reach for whenever you can, any excuse.

Westfield aside, I've personally often had as much or more fun hustling an under powered but entertaining handling car with "character" cross country than I have with much "better" faster, more powerful machinery.

As men we never admit to growing older!

When we were young we probably all remeber standing at the side of the road with our jaws on the floor as a car we loved went past.

Now we are older we can afford these cars and for no ryme nor reason we buy them and yes; it makes us feel young again and takes us back to our yoof!

That's Character as well.

I think character is the intangible element that makes you acknowledge flaws that might otherwise be unacceptable and realise that your liking of the flawed thing is undiminished even in the presence of the flaw. It was best illustrated to me when I tested an Alfa 156 GTA, a car so flawed it would have been easy to write off. But I'd still happily own one.

Funnily enough the 944/968 is also the car that's closest to replacing my westy if I ever did decide to change.

And as Nikpro says, I still hanker for a Renault 5 turbo 2 because as a youngster I saw 2 on separate occasions both being driven flat out. It nearly broke my heart when I encountered one in the westy years later being driven slowly.

I hadnt even thought about a 911 until I borrowed this one last year for the Sporting Bears and again this year..................... this year though I know I had funds and was looking for a new, enjoyable, 4 seater classic and just so happend the guy who owned this Porsche said he would sell................. right time...right car... right place.....

Yes, but not the car's character....

Like I said, I don't see how a car can have character - it's just a machine.

Although I will happily except that a car brings out OUR character :)

I hope you don't mind me intruding on this thread ReddichJay - I can only commend and appreciate the Porker and think it's an inspired purchase!
