Porsche 911 engine costs !  ! !

I have been thinking about buying the Porsche 911 3.2 SuperSport which i used at the NEC Sporting Bears last week and is on loan to me.....

I was looking at general wear and tear that these engines suffer with, it has 101,000 miles on the clock but full history and won best 911 at the Porsche owners club meeting at Harewood House in June 2010 so really is a mint example.

It may need a top end rebuild {valves / guides etc etc} but the Porsche specialists {I looked at 3 dealers and 3 Independents} want circa £3000 for a top end rebuild and another £1000 for a Sachs clutch {if it needs it}........... OUCH.....

anyone know any good Porsche specialists who charge more realistic prices.

As the car has 100% service history I would want the top end built with all correct Porsche parts....

Not a million miles from you Jay.

Indie Porsche specialist

Shirleys Porkers

Never used 'em myself, but a pal of mine swears by them, (rather than at them... :D ).

Might be worth a quick call.

If the Sachs clutch that mates to a G50 50 then I have a brand new one in the garage.

THANKS GUYS..... will start a ring around...... the engine has a little blue smoke on tick over {still pulls like a train} and I understand that valve guides are a common issue...... I know until the engine is stripped its an unknown cost but worth getting some numbers ££££ in my head before I commit to buy...

My local Porsche specialist is good

The guy that own's it is called Tony

Tony, from Wrightune just popped to my work so I showed him those prices and said they may be a little steep....

just spoken to most of the above and all in all similar prices..... £2800 - £3500 plus vat on the basis its a straight forward job   eeeeekkk....

BIG chuck of the cost is labour  - approx 40hrs work spread over a couple of weeks

my other option is take it off the road over the winter 6 months and take the engine out myself ....... get a porsche specialist to rebuild the engine then refit myself

To be honest engine in and out should not present too many issues and it could save quite a bit of labour. ;)

looks like it all drops out as a complete unit, gearbox and exhausts.................. may be a cunning plan to run the car next year "as is" then when on SORN over the winter get the job done......

It's never £3k. You *will* end up doing new barrels and pistons. :(

They're more often than not £2 - 3k in bits alone if you go genuine.

The slightly better news is that a clutch isn't £1000, even straight from Porsche. It's probably had one in the past, typically 60-80k is about it for them so you may get away with it.

Something to think of : Who rebuilds the engine will alter the value of the car come sale time, a well respected name may charge £1k more but to a switched on buyer it may be the difference between buying the car and not. None of the names mentioned above have a bad reputation, by any means but there are firms' names that will look better on the receipt : Nick Fulljames at Redtek, Mike Bainbridge, Bob Watson, Francis Tuthill + loads more are all old guard and are very well known for good work on cars of this age. Hartech are a superb firm but are more focused on the water cooled motors.

Try www.impactbumpers.com for more advice.

It shouldn't hurt to run it as is, these rarely suffer failure, they just gradually wear the valve guides and rings until you can't see the car behind.

Good luck!
