low profile jacks

Recommended Posts

Looking for some advice regarding choice of jack. I need something low-profile, but other than that I'm not too sure...

There's the 'motorsport' alloy ones on ebay for about £90 + post. Rubber contact patch, long handle for ease of use etc.

Would this be all I need? Or is there something I'm missing?

I've seen the quick-lift ones, other than being quick are there any particular advantages to these over a hydraulic one?

If your car is really low, like your new one is, the quick lift ones are definitely worth getting.  2 wheels up at a time and the weight of the car is nicely spread.

Quick lift are ok... On. My last car I used a low entry trolley jack all the time..

Back end is easy obviously, front end.. I just rolled the wheels over small bits off wood to get enough clearance.. Or jacked up each side

I have a quick lift jack too - but when using in a garage you need a lot of room to drop the handle, and obviously only fixed at one (low) height.

I bought one of the sealey/ draper low entry trolley jacks, good bit of kit, and the handle come apart into two pieces- so easy t transport in tow car boot etc

Don't buy the Clarke one from Machine Mart. It is crap...

I read a review that didn't give it a great write up and thought, it's a jack, providing it jacks a car up does it matter? Oh yes...

It's less than three years old, it has been rebuilt twice, the first time to tighten all the cheap crap stainless bolts it is built with. The second time to replace all the cheap crap stainless bolts with proper zinc plated flange head bolts and locktite and now the damn thing has sprung a major leak from the main cylinder.

Hope somebody doesn't make the same mistake

I've had of these similar alloy Motorsport jacks, and both have fallen apart and won't hold a load anymore. Wish I'd spent the money on a good one!!

Well I got one of the Clarke ali ones some time back when they were mentioned before on the boardroom, and it hasn't given me any trouble. Then again, maybe I dont use it as much as some, and it only ever lifts the Westie, never anything heavier. So I guess it depends what use you intend to put it to.

I've got an Arcan 3tonne jack from Costco.

It's low entry - about 10mm higher than the alloy race ones but low enough for me.

It is also high lift and can lift my L200 aswell so is ideal for me.

Only problem is it's weight - at 46kg it's not light but easy enough to use around the garage.  Just not the best to transport.

Cheers,

Dave

We have three that get some real abuse!

All still work well but they give the abuse back when it comes to lifting them! (They are b****y heavy!)

^^You're not wrong there!!

Mine is new (only used it once!) so can't comment on how long it will last etc but I managed to get a halfords sh*tty one to last about 10 years so I'm guessing it'll do me a while  :D
