lippydave Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 The time has come (once again ) for me to open myself up to boardroom ridicule...S'OK I like it in a kinda masochistic manner.... I am about to embark on a silly little project that will likely amuse the dwellers of the WSCC, and will definitely cause my "real world" petrol head pals to reach for new heights in the construction of derogatory superlatives.... I've been looking for a cheapish rolling project of sorts, in as much as I'd like something where I can get some use out of it in fairly short order, but something that leaves me plenty of scope for tinkering, fettling, improving, modifying and just generally farting about. My 8 yr old lad wants to be involved, I intend to build a car (probably another Westie), with him in a couple of years when he can be a bit more hands on. Anyway, we have 3 horses which require lots of attention particularly during the winter, and we occasionally need to get out across the fields to adorn the 4 legged nancys with winter rugs and stuff .Also the stables are some three miles from home and in a little valley that can be difficult to access when it snows or is a bit icy. (NB:This is the part where I'm justifying my project to the wife...) I'd recently fixed up a couple of old farm quads for some horsey friends for exactly that purpose and it got me thinking. Anyway, being a bit of a daft pillock I went off on a tangent, found something that is road legal, two seater and will be great off road with the right tyres. As a plus, it's super simple, I can get my lad helping with the spannering, he can ride in it with me on the road, and learn the rudiments of driving it off road, oh and we can do some gentle greenlaning in it with the right set of wheels (NB:This is the part where I justify it to myself...) I went and viewed it, (it's only 5 miles from home!), struck a deal and collect it this Friday afternoon.... OK time to stop waffling and let you start laughing..... It's an NCF Blitz2 Buggy with a 1275 A series lump.... This is what it looks like now, I'll come back in a few weeks with what it looks like then... I'm already thinking that if we keep it a bit longer it would be a right giggle with a big bore bike engine.... Quote
Mat Jackson Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 Awesome Idea if you ask me.... Quality time with the kids aswell.... Having two boys, I would love to do something just like that. I reckon, you could have more fun with a 1275 NCF Blitz in a muddy field with your son than in a 250BHP Westie on the road - and for a fraction of the cost. Quote
gixermark Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 i think you and the lad will get a lot of fun out of that i keep trying to justify having a road legal quad for those few days of the year when you could go out in the snow and have a proper laugh... given you have land too - you will have fun in this for sure - and its safer than a quad ! not to mention two sensible seats. the front end looks a bit......... with all the lights - but will be practical at least !! WHEN you fit a busa in the back it will be a proper toy Quote

Not only my lad, but my nephews and even my "grown-up" daughters have expressed an interest in a bit of hooning....I think I might be a bad influence... Yes, the lights and lots of other stuff needs a proper sorting. Job one (for the lad) however is de-stickering... It's got a Weber DCOE that needs setting up, (Job one for me!), and a "performance" exhaust and inlet manifold. Cosmetic improvements won't be too hard I reckon... It also has a 3-clock original Mini dash. These go for abot 90 quid on ebay so I reckon that'll quickly get tossed and ebayed, swapped out for a lighter, more compact digi-dash, plus an engine screen of some sort to stop wee hands inserting themsleves in the wrong place, and, and....You get the picture... RedditchJay Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 looks like stacks of good, honest muddy fun.......................... Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 Absolutely, looks a brilliant laugh. Good idea with the lad + family too. Had a go in various Rage and Pilot type buggy's over the years, but never having had anywhere to run one myself, ive not taken the plunge. look forward to seeing how it develops. (There's a tuned Busa engined Rage on site where I am at the mo. for some reason the owner won't let me out in it! ) Quote
stephenh Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 I'd get it to Northampton Motorsport to have it tuned on the rolling road. Throttle bodies and ecu?? Quote
lippydave Posted November 16, 2011 Author Posted November 16, 2011 I'd get it to Northampton Motorsport to have it tuned on the rolling road. Throttle bodies and ecu?? It depends how quickly we get bored of it...lol! Think it might eventually need a bit of rolling road setup, but first off a bit of old school carb tinkering to get it in the ball park... Been told that it originally had a higher comp fettled 1275 with ported head, blah, blah, but when that went pop the previous owner put a bog stock 1275 in and bolted the Weber and exhaust back on. Sounds like it's running rich as b*******y from a brief listen... Aldon Automotive are not far away from me and are Weber stockists with a rolling road too..... From a quick bit of research it seems that the stock sump pickup could lead to them running low on oil in off road situations, wonder if that's why the original motor went pop? Either way I'm probably looking to fit a centrally located sump pick-up.... Sheesh, i haven't even collected it yet, and I've got it in bits in my head.... Quote
blitz Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 I had two of these at the same time. A single seater 1275 MG Metro engined one for off road. 13" Astra wheels with Colway rally tyres for ground clearance. (Not quite the right PCD, but no problems after several years of high speed abuse) Jeffro manufactured Nylon suspension bushes. Two fiddle handbrakes one for each rear Disc brake. Hand brake turns at full throttle if you pulled the outside wheels lever, no reaction whatever if you mistakenly pulled the one for the inside wheel, no idea why. Jeffros home built special reacted in exactly the same way. Very safe with full harness, my 14 year old son, just kept going faster and faster despite warnings and because ruts in the track stopped the oversteer he eventually rolled it at high speed onto the top of the rollcage and back onto it's wheels with out any damage to him at all and only a bent front mud guard on the Blitz. ( Mguard off a truck they need to be BIG, trust me). The very safest way for a young man to learn that near the limit is fun, over it is scary. Slowed him down no end. Jeffro and I used to hire the local offroad course and our homebrews would go ANYWHERE a landrover would exept ruts that were deeper than the grounclearance. The road car was a two seater, home built 1380, 649 cam, gas flowed head, 45 Weber, very fast to about 85 and as much controlable oversteer as I have ever experianced. Do it, the most fun you can have with your clothes on. Ask Jeffro. Quote
leeswesty Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 My mate had one with 600 Suzuki bandit engine in man it was fast lots of fun Quote
jeffro Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 As Baz said gr8 fun my 2 kids had so much safe fun, just get some mud tyres on it & off you have fun jeffro Quote
CL290005 Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 Did you know that BMW bike 16v head fits this block, so with some TB's would make good power, I think the head is off a 1200 best to do a search as can't remember the actual detail think I read it in parctical performance car Quote
lippydave Posted November 18, 2011 Author Posted November 18, 2011 Picked it up earlier this evening...... It's a none runner at the moment. Unfortunately I'm out and about tomorrow, but hopefully Sunday will give me a bit of spanner time and hear it burble into life.... Lots to do, but hey, I wanted a project... Quote
Nic Ayre Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 A friend of mine Autotests one, lowered somewhat and has a 2 litre Vauxhall lump in the back. http://www.msa-autotest.org.uk/drivers.html Quote
