VW Diesel passat

Oh wise and wonderful WSCC

I have a little tale to tell that I was hoping some guru or even gossip sharer might be able to shed a little light on (not the LED thread  :D ) .

My brother bought a VW Passat diesel second hand , from a dealer , who got it ex lease from VW who had it for there own uses , FSH ( last at 110K) etc 3years old 113K on the clock now 117K

No problem until last week ( 3 and a half months after purchase )when it appears it threw a rod through the case

The motor is now with a VW main dealer who will do a standard inmspection for £48 and then a strip down check if required for a lot more. Now, whilst VW are denying all responsibility , at a first response and have offered no assistance as yet , even with the cost of strippping down. This I expect, is normal practice as the vehicle is out of warranty , and my brother is hoping they will sort the issue as a matter of goodwill.

I am not judging and don't wish to prejudice any of the investigation , I was interested to know whether there is any history or story of this sort of failure being an issue with this car ?

Has anyone had any experience or knowledge of such ???

sold 100s of 1.9s and never had a mechanical issue  :( was it low on oil  :suspect:

That is a rarity on the 1.9PD, in fact I've never heard of a rod failure on these particular engines, I had various 1.9 PD engine cars for the last 9 years. Only heard of 1   Head gasket failure in all those years. Using the wrong oil and serious abuse will cause major failures and there is always a chance it was metal fatigue from when the part was built.  Your brother  has just been unlucky.

Plenty of oil, apart the amount spat out .

It has Full dealer history and was a VW run car , the inspection will be by the dealer if he goes ahead , I guess he has been unlucky   and I doubt they are able to do metalurgical tests.

I guess he as at the mercy of VW goodwill , I will let you know how it pans out ,

thanks all .

Mate of mine had the same on his 1.9 Touran.  That was literally just out of warranty and he got nowhere with VW.

No fault found according to inspection - yeah right, big hole in the block and half the engine spilled on the road!  Cost him about 3k to sort out with replacement engine (low mileage used), new turbo etc etc.

Ditto the comments on 1.9 PD engine bottom ends - they`re normally pretty bullet proof - i`ve only ever seen 2 with escaped rods , one was after ingesting flood water     & the other with manual gears had Freeze Frame data stored in memory indicating it had reached nearly 9000 rpm before going pop - possibly over reved mechanically by a "miss selected" gear    neither of these looked to have been caused by component defects .  :suspect:

  I am a little fearful of this outcome .

I would personally have little faith in the results of a main dealer strip down and inspection , I don't reckon many would have the forensic or analytical skills to accurattely diagnose the cause .

I may be doing them a disservice , but I doubt it .

I do know a couple of guys who do this sort of inspection for a living at Shell , to check oils and wear, who could do this test properly , but I don't think that VW are prepared to go down an independant route.  :bangshead:

still , ever the optimist    ???

second hand motor will be easiest and cheapest fix, you will get one for £400-  £500 and fitting is only a few hours :t-up:

as Jeff C said..... engine swap poss best option.......

my advice would be forget it with vw ,its probably best and easier to get a secondhand engine and put that in ,would work out cheaper in the long run ,there are plenty seconhand units for sale

It may be well worth contacting the citizens advice bureau because the EU warranty laws protect you a lot maore than any manufacturer will admit to.

The way I see it even if you don't get a result from them it hasn't cost you anything. Drop them an email or phone call outlining the full circumstances.

I worked in retail and if you knoew the law and your rights you got a quick and satisfactory resolve than if you didn't or wasn't willing to take it to the authorities.

Good Luck

as said, get away from main dealer, they will just run you a nice bill up. 2nd hand motor is your best option
