I suppose it's like the safety cells in F1, with modern materials etc. we'd somehow come to see the safety gear nowadays as indestructible. A timely reminder...

What a sad and tragic loss, though Lippydave's recent post summed it up much better; at least he was where he wanted to be, doing what he loved.

Really feel for the other riders involved though, there looked to be nothing they could have done differently, but they'll still carry it with them always.

After the high of the rugby, Sunday tuned quickly into a sad morning. Saw the crash and my word that was horrible. He was one of those people we'll remember for the character and not just the racer.

Feel sorry for Edwards and Rossi but there was nothing they could have done. Edwards looked heartbroken slumped on the side of the track when he saw the aftermath of what he was just involved in.

Took the Westie out Sunday for possibly the last blat before the SORN goes in. Damp roads after watching that accident, I took it very slowly.

I wouldn't be surprised if Rossi takes over Marco's ride next year.......... he sint going anywhere with Ducati..... his best mate has just been killed.... Rossi has had a real low season...... poss his worst ever.....

I think there's avery real likelyhood that Rossi will retire....

Very sad as it is , I dont see how a freek accident situation like this would cause hime to retire

Though could see how it might possibly influence any decision if he was already thinking of retirement  :t-up:

Rossi has tweeted that "Marco was like his younger brother"  just think Rossi is in a low place this year, think he has had one podium and god knows how may crashes........... the impact with Marco must be so implanted on his mind...... forever....

Racers are a different breed to you and me, sure it's going to weigh on his mind having mentored Simo but I can't see this being the sole factor that makes his mind up about retiring.

Maybe have a crack at rallying, maybe go for a seat in GP2, maybe take a year off, maybe Ducati will sort their chassis/ engine out, Rossi will win the MotoGP and dedicate it to Simo. Who knows? Only Rossi and his crystal ballbag.

As an ex racer {National Level} on Yamaha TZ250cc bikes your right,,....racing is all that matters, I was involved in three fatal incidents over my 15years racing and each time I got back on the next race...... didnt worry me what had just happend as it wasn't me .. ... .. ...  Until the last one at Cadwell who was my team mate............. and having just turned 32yrs old I decided enough was enough

Yeah, that's what I was getting at, we've got a lot of track experience on the board here but it takes a special kind of person to make it to the top level of professional racing or we'd all be doing it. Doubt it's the first friend Rossi (or indeed Edwards) would have lost. It was all part of racing going back 20-30 years.

Like the moto-x guys riding with 2 broken feet, Tour de France riders with broken collar bones, MotoGP riders with broken arms, rugby players with broken fingers and dislocated shouldrs, normal people would feel sorry for themselves and sit in the bath tub all afternoon but they've got a mentality we can't appreciate.

Indeed, quite aside from the "Human aspect" of the tragedy, Simoncelli was a proper throwback as a racer, wild and on the edge on track, willing to hang it all out, and a proper livewire personality off track.

Even more of a shame is that the two other guys involved in the crash are also "proper characters" in an old school style, neither afraid to spit their opinion out or worry too much about rocking the corporate sponsors boat, unlike automaton drones like Pedrosa and Stoner....

Like Jay I raced Supermoto at national and International level, and experienced lots of asty stuff including losing friends at the TT.  It didn't affect me for a long time, but one day, all of a sudden, I just figured out thatI was done as a competitive racer, and that was it...

However the Simoncelli thing is a much more personal thing for Rossi, he was directly involved in the fatal crash of his best racing mate sadly...

What I'd really love to see is them sort the Duc', and for Rossi to be back at his best and win the title next year with Hayden second...The realist in me says that it's more liable to be a duel between Lorenzo and Stoner, with Pedrosa running them close.....

(If anyone can pull off a Ducati competitive comeback it's Rossi, everytime folks think he's screwed the pooch, he pulls it out of the bag... :D )

Really hope I'm wrong about his retirement, but I wouldn't put money on it not happening.....
