what medium size Van to get  ??

Recommended Posts

I have a deposit on the Cooper carrier karting van (was a new model 311cdi sprinter lwb) and planned to replace it with something smaller and am thinking a lwb vw transporter tdi, I was going to get 1.9tdi 102bhp and remap it but as i  plan to tow Pepper to trackdays with it I was thinking about maybe getting the 2.5tdi which comes in 130 bhp and 174bhp, I know the 1.9 is great on fuel but has anyone any experience of the 2.5 engine and what it will do mpg or on a tank ?

also interested in opinions of the later transits and Vito vans if anyone has experience of them ?

oh and if this follows what vehicle rules I will ignore everything told and  i will be ordering an aston Martin with a towbar by the end  :p  :p  :p

transits are bullet proof and the 100 bhp ones pull like trains and will tow all day long , the 130 vw transporters are stunning cant beat em for towing dont go with anything less than a 2.5 though they dont seem to tow as well as the transit if less than 130 ,later vx vivaro 115bhp 2.0  are also spot on and dont rust at all very very nice vans and you can chip em with good results ,forget vitos there are not the best by no means ,infact crap comes to mind . if i was buying i would go for the new shape 125 bhp transit with the goodies ,i would not pay the vw premium they command  for the 130 or 174 if you want a decent one ,i have just recently sold my 55 plate 130 2.5 tdi  transorter kombi but only because it cost me 5.5k and got 10k for it  :D

at the moment im running a 07 plate  115 bhp vivaro and love it , i have had about 30 vans jeff of various makes specs and ages ,so thats my findings

cheers steve, Im looking at the vws but they do seem to command good money  :sheep:  Im not a renault man, my pal used to run them in his company and a few grenaded themselves with turbo issues

the guy that does my windscreens swears by his new transit and reckons its fantastic on fuel, I will have a look into a new shape swb see what they are like for size, looking at the transporters they might struggle on width between the arches to fit a kart  :suspect:  :suspect:

I'll agree on the Vivaro...

They do chip nicely as well, dunno the numbers but the before and after A*** test feels v.impressive...Ooodles of mid range grunt... :D  :D

Had acouple of VIto's too, I'd agree that they aren't as nice to drive as the equivalent Vivaro/TRafic/Primastar...and overly expensive fot what they are...

getting over 40 mpg about 44 tbh out of me vivaro and around 32-34 towing ,transit is a heavier van but you get around the same towing at sensible speeds

just done essex and back from our place on less than half a tank in the vivaro  :t-up:

Jeff - I think Rich K has a new shape MWB Transit. Have a word with him. They seem OK to me and would be probably be top of my list if I was on the look out for another van
