Cleggy the Spyder Man Posted October 15, 2011 Posted October 15, 2011 Paris is stunning any time of year - all the tourist things will be open as far as I know just make a point of walking everywhere and you will see soo much montmartre at night is lovely looking over the city, if you can stretch to it do one of the shows with the topless girls (very spectacular shows), notre dame, champs elysee and so much more enjoy Quote
Ciprian Posted October 15, 2011 Posted October 15, 2011 Yeah, say hello to my parents, they will also be in Paris for xmas, again, they seem to like it there so something must be right about it... Quote
dombanks Posted October 15, 2011 Author Posted October 15, 2011 whilst this may not be a huge problem is paris just one huge city of brothels, porn shops and red light districts? looking for hotels and reading reviews it just seems to be a recurrant topic which seems to crop up no matter which part of the city i look in that and bed bugs . seems like they have imported new yorks problems Quote
Rab (bombero) Reid Posted October 15, 2011 Posted October 15, 2011 Two hotels that I certainly found comfy, clean and pretty central are the Grand Hotel du Palais Royal and the Hotel Brittanica. Close to the Ile de la Cité and the Quartier Latin, which are great for walking around, small boutique shops and good restaurants No experience of it at Christmas but would imagine they'd be like any other major attraction European city ie open all the time. carpetstu Posted October 15, 2011 Posted October 15, 2011 Go to New York instead, much nicer and not full of French Quote
davidgh Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 Go to New York instead, much nicer and not full of French Definitely not nicer. Different style of enjoyment altogether -- in NY the waitrons (sic) will be rude to you overtly, in Paris they will be impolite more subtly . But definitely full of French. The following is a true story. I was sitting with friends in the lobby of a small hotel in the 8th late one evening when a couple walked (uncertainly) up to the reception desk. The man asked (in English, but with a German accent), "do you have a room for us tonight?" He was met with a shrug. So he tried the same request in German. He was met with another shrug. Disconsolately, the couple made to leave, but, just as they reached the door the "gentleman" behind the counter called out (in perfect English), "Monsieur, if you can say one single word to me in French, I have a room for you". I echo the point about walking. If you are even half way fit, the whole of "tourist Paris" can be walked -- and there really is just so much to see. Relax, and enjoy... Quote
John Loudon - Sponsorship Liaison Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 France - ghastly place full of french who eat snails, onions and bits of frog Quote
dombanks Posted October 16, 2011 Author Posted October 16, 2011 i recon the frogs have better food than the septics.... thanks, my only real concern was that restaurants will be shut on christmas day or impossible to get into so we just need to book something now. ... that or buy a s**t load of booze and crisps from a supermarket the day before! weve booked into a hotel in montmartre so looks nice and central and you can get a pass for the metro for the week for ~20euro. when in rome in the summer we used on of these multipass things for metro/bus/tram and it was excellent value for money. there looks plenty to do just hope its not too wet. cold i can handle but wet is just crappy. davidgh Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 Montmartre not central, but lovely. Restaurants may indeed be difficult (packed out) on Christmas Eve (the French traditional Christmas dinner) and on Christmas Day (closed). The hotel will be able to advise though. Sounds great... Quote
Lurksalot Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 Dom , You're still a young man , If you are taking a young lady to Paris , you really don't need much more than the hotel Quote
