markcoopers Posted September 28, 2011 Posted September 28, 2011 Dear Collective, Has anyone any direct actual experience of an e36 M3 SMG 1 gearbox? I ask as i am trying to understand just how unreliable the system is/is not? The key board warriors on the forums will all say "i had a mate and he had loads of problems", but they them selves did not actual have the car. So are they a £1500 bill every 20,000miles or every 70,000miles or is it time related? THey are pretty common on cars with 30k to 170k on them, so am struggling with just how unreliable are they. Not asking they are any good to use, that is a personal choice. cheers, mark Edit...yes i meen m3 not m4.....A*** Quote
Autosri Posted September 28, 2011 Posted September 28, 2011 its the same as anything mate if you look after them like regular oil changes using decent oils they are fine after all they are manual gearboxes so are strong as in mecanicals it seems to be the pumps that are a problem how much are the gearboxes fetching on ebay now and maybe do some reading if its possible to fit the smg 2 or even the ssg from things like the e46 330 ect Quote
Cleggy the Spyder Man Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 I heard from a m8 that they are 3rd division football players cars and that if you turn the basement jacks music up a bit so that the back window vibrates, turn your baseball cap backwards and have sequins sown into your Sergio tochini track suit all your problems will disappear because them b***hes will think you are sooo mighty fine as they drive past your oil slick that you have left on the paston parkway that you won't give a stuff good luck flyboy Quote
chazpowerslide Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 I think the problem is that you should never try to substitute a fridge for a gearbox particularly in a hight torque application such as this. I can understand the reliability issues in doing so. I'd look for a car with a conventional gearbox. Chaz. Quote
markcoopers Posted October 1, 2011 Author Posted October 1, 2011 I called a few independent specialists and one said. We love them, the most reliable source of income we could offer ask BMW to engineer into their cars. That was enough for me, SMG now dropped. Quote
