Tim.Ford Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 Hi guys, i put a timing gun with a rev counter on the leads yesterday, knowing that my rev counter was about 500 out, however am a little unsure on what to do to fix the counter, have had a bit of a google and know the there is a plus and minus adjustment on the counter, should i really use this to correct nearly 500 plus out on the counter. Or should i be looking else where to solve this issue. Ford pinto 2.0 Tim Quote
Autosri Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 our pinto does this too with a vdo gauge its weird does yours get prograssivly out the faster it revs outs is out by like 200rpm at tickover and over 1000 at 4k rpms lol i know ours has an adjustment pot and you can change the cylinder count too so im just gunna have a play with all the settings as im sure it would come close i recomend you find a manual for your gauge to see if the switch combinations are correct as it is now good luck Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 Yep, like Gary said Aftermarket gauges need setting up for the sort of engine/ignition system that you're using. The VDO style common on WF's usually have a set of dip switches on the back. You set these according to whether it's a four, six, eight etc cylinder engine. But also depending on whether you have a traditional old school distributor, or are using what's an engine management system with whats known as wasted spark. (this fires the spark plugs twice as often as the distributor would) Once this combination is set, you can then do any fine trimming with the pot. Quote
Tim.Ford Posted September 17, 2011 Author Posted September 17, 2011 just about To take it out so will double check the dips first, if they are correct hould i then adjust the screw on the back of the counter in time to the timing gun rev counter? Or look further afield for the issue. Tim Quote

Autosri Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 Mine is the opposite way round at 4k on the counter it's only around 3k on the crank so mine is over reading Quote
Tim.Ford Posted September 17, 2011 Author Posted September 17, 2011 Well that didnt work , however the jumpers where not correct they were all set to off. So fixed that, it does read better t the top end however i just cant get it to match the timin gun counter. Its still 500 off again. I had a look at the coil and the wire for the rev counter has been cut and then rconnected, pic link is here. Coil picture Do you think this could effect the reading? I suppose the only way to check this would to create all the wires again as a test connectin them to all the right places. Tim Quote
