Speed Freak Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 Hi there, Ive come accross this website which offers all sorts... including engines... IS IT ALL CODSWALLOP!? Theres loads on offer, but what worries me are that the prices are bizarrely low.. I realise that the website is similar to an ebay, in that they merely advertise parts for both consumers and businesses.. Heres a couple of engines of offer...: http://london.craigslist.co.uk/pts/2584249494.html http://london.craigslist.co.uk/pts/2570116115.html Now the second one, is supposedly the r500 duratec engine.. This is new, and normally would fetch anywhere between 11-14k, theyre selling for 4400!!!!!! The thing is theyres loads of engines all at low prices, so I dont get it...cant be all fraudsters! If anyone, happens to know the deal, it would be appreciated if you could enlighten me! Cheers Quote
Speed Freak Posted September 15, 2011 Author Posted September 15, 2011 Had anyone even heard of them before? Quote
peterg Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 Never used it sorry, I'm guessing the second engine is NOT a genuine brand new R500 engine but a Duratec with some R500 spec bits bolted onto it... anyway, if it's never been run how come he says it makes 263bhp Quote
dombanks Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 Looks to me to be a gumtree type free adds place. If you google craigslists.org it has a FAQ to explain it. If it is just this then the prices are just what people think their stuff is worth and I guess just like eBay buyer beware. Quote
Speed Freak Posted September 15, 2011 Author Posted September 15, 2011 Ive emailed asking if the guy would sign some sort of a contract quoting what sort of power the engine should have and what parts are included. Have to wait and see.... theres another engine which is also interesting...... f20c with tbs, dry sump 1700!!! http://london.craigslist.co.uk/pts/2585316820.html Im going to try and find out more about this site.... It all seems too good to be true. And normally it always is--just dont know yet what the catch is Well the more I look into this the more it seems legit.... Just seems like your run-of-the-mill ebay... Clearly uve gotta watch out tho, just as you do on ebay too... If you havent checket it all out yet, do it! lots on offer..... 6 speed sequential doggy quaifes for 1200 too!!! Quote
Speed Freak Posted September 15, 2011 Author Posted September 15, 2011 nobody here got any experience with them Quote
Rednop1 Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 tried to buy an engine from here and there seems to be alot of scamers Quote
Speed Freak Posted September 15, 2011 Author Posted September 15, 2011 all in the pipeline my son...dont you be worrying yourself about that. ;-) p.s thanks for your input Quote
nikpro Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 p.s thanks for your input Do you wonder why there is sarcasm in my posts - you post asking for advice then don't listen to it anyway! Everyone in the post I have linked to states 'go for chassis first'...........six months on we still get the pointless Posts over high powered engines..........and still no car! There is so much more to a car than the b****y engine - why are there no posts asking about suspension set-ups/shocks/wheels/tyres/driving/interior/gearboxes/diffs etc?...........worry about these first and spend your money here! Please refrain from sharing your dreams with us - just buy a b****y car! Why did you not buy Matt Seabrooks engine? Or buy Terry Everall's - both are/were outstanding IMO and complete bargains - you will not get cheaper horse power than these. (But way,way over the top for anything other than competition) You do not need more than 150-180bhp in a Seven unless you are competing! (Sorry - I forgot you wanted to race against Porsche's on the Queens Highway and blow them away! ) Regarding Craigslist - I personally would not buy a high spec engine that is photographed on a dusty garage floor - I would want to buy it new from a reputable engine builder or allready 'know' the seller if it is second hand - never from an auction site/piston heads etc. At present - if you really are serious about buying a car you run the risk of spending way to much an a 'high spec engine' that probably isn't and only having enough left in the budget to buy a fairly old/tired chassis - ending up with a very below average car with an engine that 'looks good on paper' but in reality is crap! (I suppose it sounds good in the Pub though ). In the last six months there have been some stunning cars for sale on here - just go and buy one of them and forget about the engine spec! Quote
Speed Freak Posted September 16, 2011 Author Posted September 16, 2011 this thread was nothing to do with me going on about wanting massive power etc etc... This was all about craigslist, and if its all legit. I quoted the engines that are on offer. You seem to think that because I dont ask about gearboxes brakes etc that they arent important to me-its not true, I merely dont need to ask any questions about that yet, as they can easily be altered should I not find a car with the right setup. Ive done lots of research into different quaife and tranx gearboxes, what gear ratios would be appropriate to certain engines , and what diff ratios too, 4pot calipers on the front would also be something I would want......ITS NOT THAT I DONT CARE ABOUT ANYTHING ELSE OTHER THAN POWER:Maybe thats how it looks like, as I dont ask other questions, but it really isnt.. If Ive rubbed people up the wrong way because of that then im sorry. To come back to your 150-180hp quote, Im affraid there we have to agree to disagree. I test drove a c20xe powered westy last year with about 180hp, running a bgh heavy duty box, so the dynamics wernt all that bad-and personally it wasnt fast enough for me. Im not an 18year old who hasnt learnt to drive properly yet. Im 30 and although you never stop learning, Im fully capable of handling a more powerful westy. Im not sharing my dreams either-I am going to by a car, but as Im sure ur aware, Im not in the country till november. So thats the time where I can buy one. Im merely trying to put together a project for the winter. dont know why I always have to explain myself, this thread was about the craigslist website, not me saying Ive gotta have 250+ hp. So there we are, all out in the open- now can we stop all this sarcasm crap please? Quote
Captain Colonial Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 So there we are, all out in the open- now can we stop all this sarcasm crap please? Quite agree. I disabled Ignore just to read what got you upset, and now turned it back on again. goodness me, the last thing anyone needs in here is being reminded of what they've said and the mistakes they've made in the past - most of us have wives for that unpleasant function already. Like none of us have ever changed their minds before? How much time does someone have on their hands and how bitter do they need to be to make a concerted effort to do a search and unhelpfully cherry-pick and pull people's past comments apart just so they can feel superior? If you can't be helpful and just answer a simple question that someone posts without being aggravating, or post something that lightens the mood or educates us all, kindly don't post anything at all. The past is another country - let's go explore some new countries already. Anyway, Craigslist... not for me on something as expensive and valuable as an engine or a car, thanks. I'm sure some of those are legit, but many will be a scam with a very good chance of losing your cash and no comeback. As you said, if it looks too good... but that's just me, liking security and a safety net when parting with my money. If you want a real laugh, go look at the Personals section - take beer, popcorn and Pringles with you, it's unreal. Quote
s2k7 Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 timmeh---craiglist is legit and big in the USA oh, don't force the issue....you and I are outsider and the bully ought to get you. Quote
Speed Freak Posted September 16, 2011 Author Posted September 16, 2011 ahhh the man with the supercharged s2000 engined westy! Hows things mate? Hows the car? Any work been done to her? so craigslist is legit! good to know, cheers for that. Quote
Captain Colonial Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 so craigslist is legit! good to know, cheers for that. Oh, don't get me wrong, craigslist is legit... but I fear there are a higher number of scammers using craigslist than eBay. Just be careful is all. Quote
