Is it all about Westfield and Caterham?

Hi there, just been nosying around on Pistonheads, and its amazing how many types of sevens are about nowadays. Just wondered if any of you guys out there, have had any personal experience with some of them?( any Opinions on build quality and handling would be appreciated).

Although this is the westfield club, would love some honest opinions on some of these other models...

Heres a few you come accross quite often;

MK indy

MNR

Stuart Taylor

Formula 27

Realise theyres lots more, but these seem to be the closest to the typical lotus 7 caterham shape...

The MK Indy is a good car but not as good as Westfield

I'm one of those wierd people who really like the MNR Vortex with the ugly (but strangely good looking) front.

I thinkit's like everything, if it's built well with attention to detail and a good spec, then all of the cars listed are good.

Terry, why is the westfield better?

Are there any floors in the build or handling of the other cars?

Jenko; I heard somewhere that the vortex is quite a heavy seven...Is this true?

Well, I suppose my colleagues on the boardroom would expect me to be one of the first on here.... :p  ....

We have two Strikers in the family, and, more recently, one Westy. Sons and I have campaigned a Striker in the Speed Series since 2005, with some modest success. If I tell you that it came as quite a surprise to me when I first beat my Striker time (with the same engine, though a better gearbox) at a circuit in the Speed Series (MIRA this year) in the Westy, it'll tell you all you need to know about my view of the handling of the Striker chassis.

Build quality is what you make of it. It can be high integrity (I think ours are)  --  but it's never going to be remotely plush or elegant. So, if you are a polisher, or a concours man, my advice would be to stay well clear.

I used to own a tiger cat e1 before the westy, tiger was a good car had s pinto engine, a bit bigger than the westy width and length, well I do own a narrow body, i loved the tiger bonnet bulge and low mean looking nose cone, but overall the westy is the better one

It is if it is modified by Jeffro.

This might not be a which is better or why are others poorer question, as I suspect that each in their own right are good.

As contentious points go;

Traditionally westy's were more expensive to purchase and build, so other 7's filled the lower price Market. While not really a reflection on each marquees quality and ability, you would have to say that as a general rule of thumb you get what you pay for. I mean even in westfields a car built with all new parts is worth more than one built with 2nd hand parts.

I have owned a few other kit cars, but 6/7 west fields to date and always find the west fields better built, thus more reliable and thus more enjoyable to own. I am no gods gift to driving, so can not comment on the handling merits per say, but have never felt wanting in a Westfield.

DO NOT BUY AN MNR

i like all 7 esque cars.  lots of them have different plusses and minus'.  i currently run a sylva phoenix (its a striker, but better looking).

without going into the why's and where fors, i would strongly recomend going for a proven product that doesnt stretch the manufacturers capability.  striker (raw), westfield, catherham have all been around for years, a lot of the failings have been thrashed out and the product improved.  the MK cars are good sound cars that dont stretch the limits of the manufacturer.  tiger also have a good rep, but ive never driven one. stuart taylor made an excellent car based on the locost chassis. my personal hard on is for a fury.

DO NOT BUY AN MNR...

I have to ask, why not the MNR?

I was speaking to a guy at Mallory who raced Strikers (Russell Haggerty).  I told him I was looking to get one.  'DON'T GET A STRIKER!!' was his repeated response.

He went through the asolute myriad of fundamental design issues and failures he'd had.

He told me to get a Westfield so I did :)

Although, to be fair, I am encountering annoying niggles with the car.  I have identified them all now and they will be rectified before next year :)
