There is someone over on the Caterham Pistonheads forum saying that Carbon Mods are no longer making cycle wings, anyone know if this is correct?

this is what the web site says, from carbon modz

DISCONTINUED

This product, along with any other 'wet lay' manufactured product has for the time being been discontinued. This is to allow us to focus our manufacturing on pre-preg components.

I missed that, guess I will have to take extra special care of my wings now with no way of getting a replacement!

if you want an alternative set of wings from very very light weight carbon look up steve hignett on the locost forum - i saw some of the stuff he made at stoneleigh last time out and it was VERY very good quality and ultra light weight. well impressed.

I don't see any speculation on this thread, on the Carbon Mods website it says that their current wings are discontinued. Hopefully the fact that they state they are working on their pre-preg processes means that they will have cycle wings available again in the future, but they don't appear to be available at the moment,  unless you have found a link? As they say 'for the time being' hopefully means they will restart production of their wet-lay stuff again. Maybe they will offer both wet lay & pre-preg. (a bit of speculation there :D )

Does anyone from Carbon Mods use this forum?

If Carbon Mods are moving away from wet lay up carbon/ grp composites to a method of production involving epoxy prepregs, vacuum, heat, pressure,(autoclaves) etc, to produce a better product, then this could entail a significant price increase.

I've just received some price lists from various suppliers telling of price increases in the region of 7.5 to 20% !

What price for proper autoclaved carbon components now?  :(

Absolutely no point in these being auotclaved pre-preg.

Hi All,

I'm happy to answer any questions on the changes we're making to our products if anything we've put on the website already doesn't make it clear.

We've actually been making pre-preg carbon fibre parts for over 4 years now so this isn't something new. Our stone-chip guards (the WSCC favourite!) have been pre-preg from the start, as have our nosecones, bonnets, ducts, scoops, vents, light blocks, and numerous other products. Cycle wings, aeroscreens and dashes are really the only wet-lay parts and so these are the ones that are affected and are currently not available.

As for if and when these parts will be available in pre-preg, that I'm not sure on. Carbon Mods has grown a lot in the years since Paul and I started the company and a lot of our time is now taken up with contract manufacture for none-kitcar parts. We have to be realistic about where the profits lie and the none-kitcar side to what we do is the driving force of our growth.

The reason that these parts have not made the easy transition to pre-preg is that having set the price bar such that the products were just about cost effective to produce in wet-lay carbon, they would no longer be cost-effective to sell at the same price once made from pre-preg carbon; in fact, the raw material, processing and labour cost could well be higher than the retail price. As people have already pointed out in this thread that would mean necessary price increases and we're not sure whether the current market could accept these increases.

I hope that explains things and I'm sorry I don't have a definitive answer on if and when cycle wings, aeroscreens, dashes and other wet-lay parts might be available again in pre-preg. Please note we will be keeping the moulds and should be able to provide replacement parts for customers who require single replacements for damaged wings etc but this will need to be arranged with us directly.

Thanks for all the great support we've always had from the WSCC community,

Matt
